I think I'll go w/ the dual 3870 idea, I can get one offa newegg for like 70 bucks. And I'm not planning on upgrading anytime soon, I ran a 9600SE on games like ET and such for a loooooooong time. (Low detail, much?)

just get the 3870's.

if you have the one card and wait to crossfire like some people on here keep saying, you will never end up crossfiring - there is always something better here, not to mention the 3870's are very cheap now

I would have to agree with iceblade, another 3870 would make more economical sense, as long as you have enough room on your mobo to support everything you need + Crossfire. Besides, I don't see dual 3870's becoming obsolete any time soon. I highly doubt any game released in the next year (maybe even 2 years) will be more graphically-demanding than Crysis, and dual 3870's can handle Crysis on high just fine. The only possible reason I would get the 4850 in your case would be if somebody really wanted to buy the old 3870.

Both will be bottlenecked by that single-core.

Kick that CPU to the curb and drop in a Phenom II.

I believe you can crossfire a 4850 and 3870, but I can't quite confirm that

but Ide go with 4850, since the 3870 is an aged card.
