I decided on the crossfire since I got the second for $60 but I would recommend a 4850 since it can handle aa much better and its less hassle to oc one card also

Good choice, but I think you would benifit more from a CPU upgrade.

but Ide go with 4850, since the 3870 is an aged card.
Age itself is irrelevant. Please discuss/argue tangible aspects which are actually pertinent to the question of which card(s) to get (price, performance, features, power consumption, etc.).

Anyway. To the OP's question:

It was kind of a toss-up IMO between 3870 CF and 4850. But considering you have a single core CPU, I'd really have to agree with Hailscott above. It would probably be wise to upgrade your CPU before attempting to up your graphics power. Otherwise, you could experience bottlenecks which would not allow you to fully utilize the better/more graphics power anyway.

Crossfire

Might as well take advantage of that mobo and PSU of yours

Upgrade your CPU first though

Oh i totally missed the part about the single-core Athlon... definitely upgrade that little guy to at least an X2 6000+, preferably a Phenom II though.

Looking at the OP's setup, I can almost guarantee he is holding out for Phenom II. So based on his question (yes I have a 3870 CF setup, but this in an unbiased recommendation...I hope) I would recommend getting a second 3870. Here are my 3Dmarks06 benchmarks:
