I think us 4830 owners should take off our fans and see if any of ours have the "D1" as shown in the pictures. If so then its time to experiment with bios flashing.. iam going to check mine myself tomorrow when the PC isn't doing anything.
I will check what my Asus HD4830 says and take a picture from it If there was something suggesting it might have 800sp I could try flash it with Asus HD4850 bios. Others with Asus made cards should check their "numbers" to make some comparation.

Also new cpu cooler is on its way (arrives today or tomorrow) and then we will see better 3dmark06 scores

And is this more effective than having a d1 chipset?
or even flashing new bios?

I have the first gen single slot sapphire; could this still be a 800sp model?
in riva tuner it states 640 sp's...

Flashing a new bios is completly stupid(might work might not, and it was made for the other card for a reasone!). Doing this is a sure way of geting something stable that will work! Thanks for tip on link, will fix!(link fixed)

Pluse if something does goes wrong, I should be able to help you out!

Mine is just the regular 640 SP after looking at the die. There is nothing wrong with flashing different vendor's bios to your card as long as you have a PCI or another PCI-E card to use in your second PCI-E slot if the flash bricks the card.

Yet another thing I noticed is when the drivers aren't installed, the card runs at its ref clocks 575/900 and I get idle temp of 43c, when I install the drivers the card then runs at the speed you modded in bios, 660/1075 for me at max volts (1.158v) but idles at 37c. Fan speed is always max.

Default 4830 Update

Just to give you guys a quick update, I've been thinking about crossfiring two of these but one of my two sapphires (dual dvi's - old version) just wouldn't overclock worth a crap. It would go 700/950-ish using CCC with no bios or volt modding. So I was going to order one of the MSI's until I heard of the conflict with overclocking and the latest ATI drivers, so I decided to try the new HDMI version of the Sapphire 4830. Well, I'm glad I did. I ended up with another one with a super easy overclock (no bios, volt mod using CCC) @ 700/1090 right now and maybe can go a little higher on the memory. So the next step is maybe a Gigabyte 790x mobo, maybe a 720BE and then I got a overclocked Xfire rig. What do ya think? I got to sell my 6400+BE, biostar mobo and my extra 4830 on ebay then I could have a start on the funds needed.

A page or 2 back I posted a similar story with my HIS 4830 and a newer bios (that isn't even on HIS' site) boosted my memory speeds way up. Look at the bios P/N on the card that is OCing poorly then see if theres a newer bios (probably from techpowerup) that has the same P/N or a very similar one. That is if you didn't get rid of the card already.

Can range from around 640Mhz ~ 800Mhz core and 950Mhz ~ 1200Mhz memory. Alot has to to with cooling, luck of the draw, and if you happen to get a "crippled" bios (I can confirm the bios part as it happened to me). Also depends if your card responds to voltage changes in the bios through RBE, some seem to like it while some don't respond at all.

EDIT: You would want to be carefull overclocking the card with only a 420W PSU.

Checked gpu core and I didn't get luck, it looked exactly the same as the ones in the review/screenshot with 640sp. But new cpu cooler installed and now testing stability @3.66ghz.
