one more thing. will his cpu bottleneck?

no the CPU is not OC'd. My sons is 11 & isn't real heavy into intense games yet so figured wasn't a pressing need & I also figured if I mess something up on my 1st OC then it should be mine & not his.

well you will always have us to help you fix it. you should be able to hit 3.2 with just a change of the fsb.
what resolutions will he be playing at?

Yea, 4830 CF setup will outperform a 4850. And the prices of the 4830's make them a pretty good option. Great budget setup, but what res. are you running your monitor at?

I have crossfire 4830s running on 8x 8x 790 GX(which is PCI 2.0), they are not bottlenecked. Crysis runs 1680x1050 at all very high and 2x AA ~30 fps with my crappy CPU. They are great cards, they beat a 4870 in game the vast majority of the time and are very close with a gtx280.

He currently has a 15 inch LCD not sure what the res is as it is not hooled up to this computer right now. The current monitor (Wifes) is 1024 x 768 CRT

2 cards beats 1. but 1 high end card will still do the job. good luck whatever u choose.
