One major advantage of the Crossfire Sideport (XSP) that I see is that transfers between the GPUs would have a lower latency. The Gen2 PCI-E bridge is certainly fast, but it will take a short time to process the incoming data and send it out to the other GPU (<140 ns). With the XSP's interlink this delay is eliminated.
I think the main reason it isnt enabled now is because they havent been able to get the drivers to work properly. Its there in hardware, though, and can be enabled when need be. They arent in any hurry to fix it now though, because its still their flagship product and still holds the performance crown for AMD products. Now that Nvidia has taken the crown though, I think they might have a good reason to start investing some time in figuring out a driver solution for the sideport if they want to continue selling 4870 X2's.
