I believe the slot is what determines witch card is primary. You could try switching them, but I don’t think it will make any difference in performance.

If its working now play a while before you make any changes.

Just that the top slot with the x2 is the PCI2 x16 slot. The one beneath is the PCI2 x8 slot, having an x2 in the PCI 8.0 slot would decrease its performance surely due to bandwidth.

Both cards will be running at X8..

Hopefully someone in the know will chime in on this…

I have a Bios Option which allows me to select my primary card.
Could you check yours?
and the P45 only has x16 max
So if you only use one slot it uses the x16
if you crossfire/SLI it divides to x8 + x8

Cheers for the info, hopefully someone can confirm.

So does it actually matter if my monitor uses the single 4870 as a primary in 3D applications over the x2. Or would performance infact be the same, I had assumed I'd see greater results if the x2 were the primary?

Not sure that it matters as your programs will be running with all your GPU power.

Cheers, running some benches now. So far I've noticed that my max FPS has actually been quite a large margin higher (+20fps in Stalker) whilst my lowest has gotten worse (~6-10fps) which is odd. I think this is gonna take some tweaking. I've managed to increase the fps in the Crysis bench by 10fps which I was suprised about considering it depends heavily on CPU.

Running some tests in 3DMark03 etc. I'll post in the ATI thread shortly to see if the results are what to expect and whether I have set it up correctly.

This is going to sound very sad... but i've seen it happen. Make sure you have power to every single connector you can, at least 1 6 port per card. I spent an hour once trying to fix a machine before i actually looked at the machine's power cabling. I had asked the girl who built it if they were plugged in but on that day i learned human memory can fail... a lot.

Cheers bud. It's already sorted. For some reason I had to intall drivers on both cards separately before the rig would even acknowlegde them both together.
