Default Temporary performance increase

I currently have a 4890 (see rig). I'd like to get my framerate up a little higher in Crysis and Crysis Wars while I wait for the 5xxx series to come out. Would adding a 4870 (overclocked) in Crossfire make a substantial difference? Currently I game at 1680x1050 no AA. I plan to be upgrading to 1920x1200 soon as well.

Thanks.

You will probably only see 9-10 fps more at 1680x1050 going CF with 4890 + 4870. Crysis still doesn't like ati CF very much, even with (3) or (4) gpus.

I'd personally just hold off, not dump anymore cash into dx10 cards, and give your 4890 a decent OC. IMO, Crysis isn't worth spending extra $ on. The gameplay is mediocre and it's clearly coded more for Nvidia cards. Your 650i SLI won't do ATI crossfire anyways - it's an nvidia chipset.

With your mobo you can't Crossfire. Overclock that CPU if it's still at stock, and you will see a much bigger difference.

Have checked and you cant run Crossfire on a 650i chipset so I would stick with your 4890 and OC it as far as you can!

Gotcha. I guess the new motherboard is coming before the extra video card! Friday (pay day)... come quickly!

While we'e on the topic, Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P or Asus X48 Rampage?
I'm leaning toward the X48 because it has two PCIe 2.0 x16 slots, which the 5xxx series might use. Apparently everything up to the 4890 only uses x8 (ish).

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P or Asus X48 Rampage
Both good boards but from what I understand the Gigabyte is one of the best Intel overclocking boards and is a bit of a favorite but the Rampage series are amoung the best. If it was me id get the rampage.

Both are great boards. But the Rampage is about $100 more for very little increase in performance.
