4890. I upgraded from a 3870x2, and although each card gives approximately the same fps (give or take ~15%), the 4890 looks infinitely smoother. Even my 9800GTX+ looks smoother than the 3870x2, and it gets less than half the framerate. I place the blame (maybe inappropriately) on microstutter.
If you want huge numbers, and possibly less playability, go for the 4850x2. If you want great performance from a single GPU, go with the 4890. Edit: Keep in mind, my 3870x2 was overclocked (900/1050), and I'm comparing it to my 4890 stock.

I prefer single GPU solutions.. less heat, more compatibility, etc.

Actually the 4890 would be a way better choice.
It will overclock higher, perform better in most cases, use less power, and run cooler.

Also, people say that the 9800GTX+ and 4850 are similar in performance, but my 3870x2 trounced my 9800GTX+ as far as framerates were concerned.

I'm a huge fan of the 4850 x2, but I'm still voting for the 4890.
__________________Yes the x2 will have a higher high end, but that 4890 should give you better min fps, and when either card can give you a great high end, it's going to be the low numbers you're going to notice and be what makes it a good experience or not. Edit: Oh, and I know the xfx warranty is great, but I'd personally get the Asus with the dual fan cooler and voltage tweak tech.

4890. similar performance, and much smaller and uses less power, and you wont get any scaling issues or micro stuttering.
