Default The ol' 9200 Project

Well, my old rig died. It wasn't the greatest rig. But it did fine by me.. Or, close to it..

I am now stuck using my current sig rig. As you can see. I have a Radeon 9200 SE in there.. Not the best card in the world.. Heck, not even a good card. But it's all I got right now. So here's the plan.

1. Build an intake shroud to put some air directly to what is currently a passively cooled GPU.
Example: http://www.overclock.net/ati-cooling...ling-duct.html

2. Install a different BIOS onto the card (probably the sapphire version) and speed up the clocks with RaBiT.

3. Tighten the memory timings on the card (if at all possible) and increase Mem/Core OC. (if possible)

I can't find a pic of my exact card on the net (I'm too lazy to take one right now) but my card is layed out exactly like this sapphire 9200. Except mine's got a different heatsink, and is on the AGP bus.

Ok, so. I know that this is all some pretty aged hardware, and I know that I should just drop the few bucks to get a little better GPU. But isn't this what overclocking is all about? Going that extra distance in "the pursuit of performance"?

So please refrain from making comments on my hardware that do not advance the topic. Thanks. Also, if anyone has a AGP GPU they can get to Ontario, Canada for $20 or less (CDN) then feel free to shoot me a PM.

Other then that, if you think something won't work, or have a better idea.. Let's hear it! I already got the clock lock off of the card with ATi tool and it won't matter when I mod the BIOS.

I don't know if it's possible to loosen timings on a GPU or if it's worth it. You could try volt modding the memory and core to help with the clocks.

If you want another way to cool you card check out the link in my sig called "Lower Your GPU Temps".

Yea, I will probably zip-tie a fan (or two ) on the back aswell.

Thanks for the idea! Rep+

not sure if there is anything that can be done as far as cross flashing on that card but maybe you could do that? I crossflashed an x850 pro once to an x850xt and it screamed once I did that.

The BIOS I'm flashing to is for a sapphire version of the same card (same Core etc). It even seems to have the same clocks. I dunno if it will yield any performance gain, but it's worth a shot.

I can't dump my current BIOS to a .bin with ATi tool though.. Any decent program for doing that?

Tried it. I don't think it even saw the GPU (Being as the program is for Nvidia)

So now what I'm looking for, is 2 things.

1. A volt mod for my specific card

2. A program to dump the GPU BIOS (in case something goes wrong)

Ok, so. I installed the modded Sapphire BIOS on the card. went from about 18 fps avg. to 25 (ish) in the ATi tool 3D view. Now I am looking for a volt mod. I have built an intake with a fan for the card (exactly like this one) and now with an OC on the card. When I touch it, it feels like the card isn't even running, it's that cool. So I wanna go more on this bad boy!

Lets do it! I just can't seem to find a volt mod for it. Maybe no one has found one yet. When I get my camera back. I'll try to post some high res macro shots of the card. And see what there is to be seen.

Well speed wise your not gonna get alot more out of the core, 350nm with 2 pp. It is a 9200SE though which means 64bit memory, I would work with taht before the core

I got the mem to 180, after that it starts putting green lines on the screen. So I'm still looking for a volt mod.
