Default 4870 playing up - BADLY

Hey all,

going to bed now but will answer any responses in about 6.5hrs

The situation:

Sig rig was folding on the CPU and both GFX cards
I forgot this was happening....and overclocked one of the cards via CCC - system instantly froze, reset it and it wouldnt boot fully into windows (hangs just before the login screen)
Now i just cannot get it to work....
What i have tried so far:

Different MB slot
Different drivers
Fresh and repair loads of W7
Re-flashed both MB and GFX card (the 512mb card has the issue) bios/firmware

System runs perfect with just the 1gb 4870
adding the 512mb card in crossfire has the same result as if it is by itself.

I have put the 512mb card in another W7 system (Q6600 + Asus P5E running W7 7264 x86) and it seemed to work fine (but no drivers were tested)

Im thinking it is an issue that the gfx card is going to 3d clocks and then just crashing and not recovering.....

Also of note - if i run the 512mb card in sig system with NO drivers installed (not even the microsoft - just "Generic VGA Adapter" drivers - that card works

Have also tried a different HDD setup (an old IDE drive rather than my Raid0 setup)

Anyone had this issue and how did you fix it?????

Thanks

scottath

I don't think your PSU can do the 4870's in CF.
And then you OCed them xD

620w should be able to handle 2 4870's perfectly well actually, seeing as total system output of two 4890's in Crossfire with an OC'd i7 is only around 470w PEAK load.

I can't give you an answer, but your PSU shouldn't be the problem.

PSU isnt an issue - it has been fine for about 8 months with them - and have been both overclocked MUCH further
Also - this PSU can have about 750w pulled from it - so that defiantly isnt an issue

What do you mean can have 750W pulled from it? Do you have proof of this? It's an incredible PSU, mine has run GTX 260 SLI massively overclocked with an e8400 @4.5ghz but I wouldn't temp it with a quad...

You said it has run fine for 8 months with them, I am guessing you started having the problems when you added the Phenom 955? Unless you're going to say that's been running for 8 months too :P

Paging Dr. Linskingdom for PSU verification!

Edit: Rereading your post, I would say try the 512MB HD4870 again in the other system, and stress it (folding, ati tool, crysis/FC2 benchmark) and see what happens.

There was 2 reviews i saw where they stress tested it - pulled 748w oiut of it or something before the voltages became too unstable/out of ATX specifications
I could find links when i have more time.....

No - the phenom was added about 1.5 months ago - only had issue start last week
At the time the phenom was at stock also - has been benched with both cards overclocked @4ghz also....

I'll try the card in my HTPC tonight (going to school now) - will still be able to answer any other questions though

Also - thought i would note - before the Phenom it was running dual 4870s with a overclocked (3.6ghz 24/7) Q6600

That's after the AC to DC efficiency loss, though.

Just been thinking - the last thing to happen to the card was about 3 days before the issue - i did replace the TIM on the Core....i put on IC7 (non-conductive - i made sure before buying it)
Re apply it also?
About to testing - just got home now

EDIT - seems fine in other system - although i cannot test it in the other system as the PSU will not handle it
It booted and got into windows - however i didnt install drivers as that system has a nvidia card - dont want to screw over 2 systems

EDIT 2: now the other system will not get to the login screen with that card in....

EDIT again: Just reseated the card again (TIM) - will finish installing Windows with the good card then try it again....
Would making a custom bios that has the 2D clocks for 3D also maybe be an option? as the card seems fine in 2D
