I was wondering if any of you may know how the 4xxx and i guess 3xxx series passes sound through hdmi? Does it have its own sound card? if it does have its own sound card, how many DAC's does it have ? When playing mp3 files or flac files over it, does it sound good ? or would on board/add-on card be ALOT better for music?
Only reason i am asking is as i am not an audiophile i do like a crispness to my music, and wondering if the 4xxx series card would handle it, or if i should get a diffrent card for my new multimedia machine. Thanks

No clue about the specifics although I do know the cards have some sort of sound card device in them as they run independently of the motherboard and sound card on my system. No idea on the quality, I just know it works.
This should help: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1029603

I do believe you will be fine with a 4xxx card. HDMI passes the audio through but I dont think the video card decodes that.

Yes the 4850 has basically it's own sound card internally
Here's the specs off AMD's site Integrated HD audio controller with support for stereo and multi-channel (up to 7.1) audio formats, including AC-3, AAC, DTS, DTS-HD & Dolby True-HD4, enabling a plug-and-play audio solution over HDMI. I run my HTPC rig which has a 4830 in it and the sound is excellent. No complaints from me at all. I don't see how a sound card would be an better as all the work is being done by my Yamaha receiver really.

When the 4xxx series came out, i had to disable the sound portion of it in order to solve conflicts with my ExtremeMusic
but it looks like that issue is fixed, hdmi with sound shouldn't need much to work

The audio signals are sent digitally over HDMI- so the HD 4XXX series doesn't have any DAC's for sound output- they would be in your receiver or whatever external multimedia hardware you would be connecting the HDMI to. Sound quality should depend mostly(AFAIK) on the quality of your home theater system.
EDIT: Seems other people beat me to it.

Haha yea, i didnt expect this many replies so fast! thanks for all of them. I have been wondering about it all, i realized the receiver would decode all of the sound, i just didnt realize that since it was done digitally that it didnt have any DAC's to it, and how the sound worked in general off the card.
Thanks alot for all your replies!
