@grunion Good to see your up and running and crunching furiously
__________________![]() Just to make you aware regarding CPU work- Some projects won't give you any GPU work, if cpu and gpu work are selected. Collatz will only give you CPU work if CPU + GPU work are selected. Milkyway will only give you CPU work if CPU + GPU work are selected. SETI should give you CPU work along with GPU work for CUDA if CPU + GPU are selected. @Gill I use boinc for stability testing too, it's the only thing that can truly "max" your rig if your running an ATI & Nvidia setup. 5970 + Fermi is looking mighty tempting for my January upgrade. I'm not too sure you can compare the CUDA wu's with ATI wu's as they are written in different languages I'm not sure it's all that fair. Now if both cards start crunching using wu's written for directcompute on dx11, I think we could make a fair comparison then. Which reminds me.... while I'm here, I see grunion had an error with the directcompute benchmark in the benchmarks section.. ![]() You need the DX11 August 09 runtime installed to get the 5870 running directcompute. You can get it here... http://downloads.guru3d.com/DirectX-...load-2367.html

And thanks for all the help getting started, really appreciate it guys. Well I think I'm crunching to my full potential now. Yes? Am I where I should be with my output? ![]() EDIT> found this

![]() The milkyway client is a hell of a lot more efficient running ATI wu's rather than Cuda one's. Roughly 40 seconds per unit on ATI (48XX), I can see it's taking about 3 mins on Cuda. I haven't seen a 5870 run Milkyway yet so I guess it would be <35 or even 30 seconds. That's probably the only thing that could improve your performance even more

Well I'm trying to keep my 5870 running Collatz, the 295(stock) turns random errors while the 5870 does not.
Is there a way to keep the 295 from picking up Collatz projects? And how do I force Milkyway on my 5870?

http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz...hp?id=164#2957 Ok dudes, let's tackle this - plus the multiple wu's at the same time (another supposed trick to shave a few seconds per wu). I tried the online configurations - it isn't an option for me, but it didn't differentiate between brands. Problem I see is - no real way to pause a certain card while you're actively crunching....it would just go to the next, and so on. It's either all on, or all off - and what you have in - it just grabs and goes... So that leaves us with editing the app info file as our best option? Anyone got any better ideas, go right ahead - I'm thinking this is it... so we might as well do it, and all get it working for ourselves.. Below is my edited app info file that I edited to try to get 2 wu's going at the same time. I followed the readme down to a t....and still nothing - I'll highlight the text in red below. You'll also see the answer to grunion's question above too - I think you'd switch it to Nvidia and cuda where a appropriate - let's bold that in blue. Ok...so I dumped this file - with the astronomy app into the c:\program files\BOINC directory - but there's also another version over in the program files (x86) directory as well - I didn't put the files there as well - should I try that? Preamble directions for edited the readme (credit to the readme itself): One can configure the app through some parameters in the supplied app_info.xml. This is done by editing the line <cmdline></cmdline> There are several options one can put in there, the order does not matter. If the same argument is given twice, the last one counts. Remember that for editing the app_info.xml one should take the same precautions as for the installation of the application, i.e. one should stop BOINC completely and restart it afterwards. The options can be combined in arbitrary order. Therefore the following argument list is also valid: <cmdline>x1 n4 w0.9 x3 f20</cmdline> (exclusion of the 2nd and the 4th GPU, 4 WUs per GPU, wait factor 0.9, frequency 20Hz) In the readme - Grunions question is carried by this command: Exclusion of GPUs: x (default none) If a certain GPU should not be used by the app, one can exclude it. The GPU number has to be in the range 0..31. The first GPU in the system has the number 0. This option can be used multiple times. Per default, all double precision capable ATI GPUs are used. You don't have to exclude cards supporting only single precision, it is done automatically. My question is under this one: Number of concurrent WUs: n (default 3) It is possible to define the maximum number of concurrently running WUs per GPU. Default value is three. If the BOINC client schedules more WUs to run, they are put to a wait state and not crunched until a GPU finishes another WU. Running more than a single WU can raise the efficiency of the GPU as the remaining CPU calculations for one WU can be hidden during the wait for the GPU of another WU. More than 2 WUs don't help anymore and running too many WUs concurrently first slow down the calculation and finally crash if there is not enough memory. As a rule of thumb 256MB on a graphics card are sufficient for 5 WUs. But as mentioned, more than 2 won't help either way. If the high GPU load leads to a very sluggish behaviour of the user interface or even VPU recover events, limiting the app to one WU (n1) could improve the situation (look also into the w and f options). TEXT OF APP INFO BELOW: BODY{font:x-small 'Verdana';margin-right:1.5em} .c{cursor:hand} .b{color:red;font-family:'Courier New';font-weight:bold;text-decoration:none} .e{margin-left:1em;text-indent:-1em;margin-right:1em} .k{margin-left:1em;text-indent:-1em;margin-right:1em} .t{color:#990000} .xt{color:#990099} .ns{color:red} .dt{color:green} .m{color:blue} .tx{font-weight:bold} .db{text-indent:0px;margin-left:1em;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;padding-left:.3em;border-left:1px solid #CCCCCC;font:small Courier} .di{font:small Courier} .d{color:blue} .pi{color:blue} .cb{text-indent:0px;margin-left:1em;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;padding-left:.3em;font:small Courier;color:#888888} .ci{font:small Courier;color:#888888} PRE{margin:0px;display:inline} - <app_info> - <app> <name>milkyway</name> </app> - <file_info> <name>astronomy_0.20_ATI_x64.exe</name> <<-----THIS SHOULD BE DIFFERENT TO FOR THE NVidia version <executable /> </file_info> - <file_info> <name>brook64.dll</name> <executable /> </file_info> - <app_version> <app_name>milkyway</app_name> <version_num>19</version_num> <flops>1.0e11</flops> <avg_ncpus>0.05</avg_ncpus> <max_ncpus>1</max_ncpus> - <coproc> <type>ATI</type> <count>1</count> </coproc> <cmdline>n2</cmdline>**((**THIS IS WHERE GRUNION WOULD ADD THE exclusion??))** - <file_ref> <file_name>astronomy_0.20_ATI_x64.exe</file_name> <main_program /> </file_ref> - <file_ref> <file_name>brook64.dll</file_name> </file_ref> </app_version> - <app_version> <app_name>milkyway</app_name> <version_num>20</version_num> <flops>1.0e11</flops> <avg_ncpus>0.05</avg_ncpus> <max_ncpus>1</max_ncpus> - <coproc> <type>ATI</type> <count>1</count> </coproc> <cmdline>n2</cmdline> <<----I changed this here too?? good idea or bad? - <file_ref> <file_name>astronomy_0.20_ATI_x64.exe</file_name> <main_program /> </file_ref> - <file_ref> <file_name>brook64.dll</file_name> </file_ref> </app_version> </app_info> EDIT - I just read Milkyway's homepage read the update on the right...- the lack of wu's....is known - they are working on it....so we should all bear that in mind too when they run out of work....hence it's good we have collatz too....would like others though... A whole school and they can't find any undergrads to work on this for them?? Are they kidding? Posters in the campus center?? at RPI? they can't find anyone?? Can they offer credits for helping?

Yup - Collatz has been off and on for me for about a week now. It seems to upload them fine - but it won't report them - i have 120 sitting waiting to be taken on 1 client...
Other client not sure, I have to check downstairs still...but... what I did notice is that one client was stacked for Wu's (thankfully the 4890)...and the other was getting them piecemeal...I'm sure that has a few to report too.. As for Milkyway... .still down due to the hard drive failures. That got me thinking - I've dropped my external hard drive easily 5 or so times.....nothing..I know it's not good for it - I didn't mean to do it..but it's fine. so hard for me to think all their drives turned to junk due to construction going on nearby. Travis updated Milkyway page to say they ordered drives though, and expect everything to be up and running sometime this week..... (tomorrow's Friday though...)...hopefully we'll have plenty to do on Thanksgiving... WE NEED MORE PROJECTS...ATI DO YOU HEAR US...give them a hand!! ANOTHER UPDATE....I lost Ubuntu instance in upgrade...so went to my other instance and tried installing CCC 9.11 - still not working right...if I can get it up and running - I want to try the Collatz Linux client to compare to Vista...... I think I need to disable all the other graphic drivers through Synaptic.....It says it's installed...CCC works... but nothing works (no desktop effects..video looks like crap - windows stutter when moving - so it's clearly not working)... edit: cheap shot ATI can certainly afford hiring a dedicated developer to lend to BOINC as a whole with the $50 extra they're charging for 5800 series cards...PLUS demand is ridiculous, it will go unmatched for another 6 plus months possibly...they can definitely afford it!!!
