Default 5870 1GB Eyefinity does NOT support non DP monitors over 3rd monitor

DP = DisplayPort
edit:ya'll seems to be confused about active and passive so let me clear this up:
This is $10

this is $100, you need THIS ONE

Eyefinity on Radeon HD 5870 1GB Version
The following have been confirmed:
1. 5870 1GB that was released recently does NOT support more than two DVI monitors
2. To use eyefinity, 3rd monitor must support DisplayPort
3. You cannot use passive DP to DVI/HDMI adapter (<$20)
4. You can use an active DP to DVI/HDMI (>$100), which converts the signal for you
5. This is a hardware limitation, so it will stay this way
6. We still dont know whether future editions of 5870 will include a 3rd DVI/HDMI
7. All of the above has been confirmed by Dave Bauman (Technical Marketing Manager of ATI) over at www.widescreengamingforum.com and selfless souls who helped with testing

So what's the big deal?
The hype over eyefinity was that it supports multimonitor gaming without another expensive converting box such as triplehead2go, and that it'll be more user friendly because its a package deal. Many of us assumed that you can use a cheap passive DP to DVI adapter so that our DVI/HDMI monitors would just work. But it didn't work like that, and people got pissed off after it's release, such as me.

The big issues are: there are very few monitors with DP that targets the main stream consumers, and an active DP to DVI adapter is over $100.

why do i care?
I sold my video card and triplehead2go to upgrade to 5870. AND now I can't use a 3 monitor setup because my monitors dont have DP. It doesn't make sense to spend another $100 on an adapter. The net amount I have to spend to get this working on three monitors is not worth selling my triplehead2go.

Eyefinity: $1 difference
From one of the creator of eyefinity:

I assume by DP you mean analog or VGA, correct?

1. there's nothing to research because there are no offical word from ati, or even of them mentioning "IT DOES NOT SUPPORT DVI DUDE"
2. my assumption was that you could use a $10 DP to DVI becaues it makes sense from engineering point of view considering eyefinity and the audience it targets, but now i will never assume anything from ATI again lol
3. people tried passive adapters and they said it doesn't work.

I'm just saying.. i've seen so many people doing this, even before they were released. Ok you may have considered it properly, but i always think it best to wait even a few weeks, just to see if people have issues. it's the with operating systems, jumping on the band wagon straight away is not always the best choice. I'm not getting at him, i'm just saying he should have thought about it a bit more. They aren't going to run away!

Although I am empathetic to your situation, I have to say like I have been saying. It is NOT wise to be the guinea pig of the new hardware that comes to the market. I have been saying this sense the first bechmarks of the 5870 came out. The hype made everyone including yourself jump on the band wagon and like many I imagine bit them in the butt.

Goodluck getting everything worked out, and let this be a lesson to us all.

Have you got any actual proof of people saying it doesn't work/showing it doesn't work?

I think it's a step into the future.
DP is so much better than DVI/VGA for reasons the SATA is to IDE. smaller and have higher bandwidth.
