Default ATi Power Consumption Graphs

I have collated the power consumption data from reviews on xbitlabs.com and GPUReview.com, and made an easy reference graph to help users of the ATi forum. The graph has data for most recent ATi cards, however cards such as the HD4850x2 and some of the HD5k series have been omitted due to lack of data. The testing methodology that XBit uses is detailed below.

Quote:
The mainboard in this testbed was specially modified: we connected measurement shunts into the power lines of the PCI Express x16 slot and equipped them with connectors to attach measuring instruments. We also added such a shunt to a 2xMolex → PCI Express adapter. The measurements were performed with a Velleman DVM850BL multimeter (0.5% accuracy).

We loaded the GPU by launching the first SM3.0/HDR graphics test from 3DMark06 and running it in a loop at 1600x1200 resolution and with enabled 16x anisotropic filtering. The Peak 2D load was created by means of the 2D Transparent Windows test from Futuremark’s PCMark05 benchmarking suite.
The blue and red columns show us what you would expect power draw to be in normal gaming. Programs such as Furmark will stress the GPU much more and therefore draw more power, the orange column shows the maximum stock power draw as published by ATi, and is closer to the figure you would expect running furmark. Also consider that power consumption can increase dramatically when a card is overclocked or over-volted. I suggest you take these results as a rough estimate and add at least 30% contingency. For more technical specifications for GPUs, check out the page for the card at GPUReview.

If you would like to see power consumption graphs for older cards, see this thread.

+Rep Wow look at the 5870 15 at idle and 107 at load! its even less then my 4850. I just got a 750W PSU to be able to crossfire 5850 when i get my hands on them i guess i didn't need that much power!

EDIT: Oh wait i can't rep you sorry.

Holy molly, that's great idle load for the 5870.

I find PCGH to be more reliable for power consumption numbers. They use GRID and Furmark instead of 3dMark06 to load the video cards. GRID is more representative of power consumption with modern games compared to 3dMark06.

Im pretty sure the 5870 was rated at 188Watts during load...

EDIT: Unless that was just measuring the Core. That uses ~110 under load.

With current games the 5870 draws ~130W during load. TDP is 188W which is the max possible under reasonable conditions. The OCCT video card test and Furmark are not considered reasonable conditions since they do not stress the cards the same way a game will. DX11 games may stress the card more and thus increase power consumption.

The 4890 is also around 160W. The 5850 is 19W/104W idle/load. The 5770 is 22W/78W. These are all from the PCGH reviews. Everything else seems right.

Ohhhh, i thought he meant total max load. My apologies.

They seem to have slipped past my radar. Will look into them later, Luckily it's easy to update (thanks google docs)

Cheers guys
