Also, Rewind, why so disbelieving? Hardware failures happen all the time. While it might not be XFX's fault, they very well could have gotten a less than awesome batch from ATI. This still means that XFX cards may be more prone to failure.

It sucks that XFX's ATi cards are not working properly. I guess it wasn't meant to be for ATI.

Check out the cooler. I've had these issues and it always turned out to be a cooler that wasn't making full contact. Now this was with aftermarket coolers but still, I'd check things out first.

I still think it has nothing to do with XFX. These are all reference cards and XFX did nothing but put a sticker. One other reason is that people probably but XFX 5870 more then any other brand hence the higher failure rate.

Lots of tension in this thread. I assume you've tried 1 stick of ram, etc?

The only reason XFX would have a higher failure rate is if there were some kind of defect within a specific batch that XFX purchased. Putting their XFX sticker on a reference card changes nothing, it's still reference. OP, you claimed the card was scorching hot to the touch? Where did you touch it? Maybe the VRM got too hot? It really could be nothing more than bad luck or maybe it's something else altogether(defective batch). Hopefully your RMA is handled quickly by XFX.

Has never gotten as hot as it did when it shut the computer down. Yes, hopefully a bad apple and not a bad batch.
