is the 4850 compatable with dx11?

You will be able to play them, but will not benefit from DX11 games such as the features DX11 has.

That would give you an improvement over the 4850 for sure, and also is future proof, and maybe get another later on for cf

long answer: Sort of. You can't use hardware tessellation and a few other features that iirc were put into the pipelines of direct x11 ready cards
