looking at his screenshot he doesnt have the "enable manual fan control" checked off. But I do like your point better to be cool than hot in this category. what stress program do you use?

My fan is on Auto, and use Furmark to stress it, and MSI Afterburner works good with these cards.

I prefer to use RivaTuner for clocking my card as CCC is limited. You usually want to work on the Core and Memory by increasing them by 5mhz and testing each time within a game or by running ATITool. If you can find someone elses results for their overclock, you can work off of their results and find your sweet spot.

Like said above, try out the clocks he mentioned, and test in ATITool for about fifteen minutes using the "Scan for Artifacts" button. If you see yellow dots or get errors, then back off the memory and core by about 10mhz and try again. If you don't see any, then you can test in game for a bit to make sure it's stable, and then you can increase the Core and Memory until you find errors, and then back off by about 10mhz or so.
I'm not sure if ATItools is working for me, the 3d view works but when i use artifacts it just sits there with the furball it doesn't move

I just downloaded MSI afterburner to check it out(http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/overview.htm) and I have to say that I am very impressed. Adjustable fan speed curve is optional just like when flashing bios. Overvolting is an option as well(too bad I bagged my WC gear). If you own an ATi card and do not currently have this program I suggest downloading it ASAP!

EDIT: ATi tool doesnt currently work with the 5xxx series cards. Use furmark (http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/) for 15-20 mins. If no artifacts then its probably stable.

I'd try to keep it in the 40s at full load. Might need better cooling. No higher than 50's.

Not true. into the high 60s is absolutely fine. My old 4870s would get into the 80s and sometimes 90s without artifacting.

Just use CCC, chances are if you max out those sliders its going to be unstable anyway unless you up the volts.

Use OCCT to test stability.

80-85C is fine for load temps.
