Do you think the shortage of 58XX's is an actual shortage?

I'm wondering if there really is a shortage of 58XX cards. ATI has said that due to yield issues, there were not enough cards produced, but 5770's and 5750's are still in stock with good numbers.
They recently increased the price of their cards by $20. Nvidia has no cards to compete with the 5XXX series, and they will not until January 2010, or later. Is this a shortage that ATI planned, or is an actual shortage due to yield issues, and why do you think so?

With the financial state of AMD i doubt they would create an artificial shortage. If i were AMD i would be trying to move as many products as possible.. a $20 increase across the board wouldn't compensate for the lucrative profits they would be raking in if there were enough 5800 cards for everyone wanting one.

On top of yield issues there has been a lot of mention of AMD not ordering enough 40mm wafers. Put the two together, and a large market of PC users who haven't been upgrading because of the recession, and you've got your shortage.

Alot of companies have trouble keeping up with supply & demand. Don't see how AMD would be an "exception," with their most demanded card of today. It's not some conspiracy.

If nVidia was on the ball here they'd be getting manufacturers to slash prices of the GTX260 and 280. As it is a 4850 can be had for $100 Canadian and a GTX260 is still over $200.

2009 has been a year for ATI where they sold alot of 4870 and 4890 cards. Enough to close this fiscal year.
__________________I think they will have full stock of the complete 5x series in January, so the sales will be for the fiscal year 2010. Maybe that's why.

I think of it this way.
If ATI has the cards they should sell it since if people buy out all the 58xx cards then they won't need to buy cards from Nvidia when they come out. But if they don't sell cards then people have all that money left over to buy a 3xx series card when Nvidia comes out with them. I don't see how creating a fake shortage is helping ATI, there's probably a shortage since they're all reference cards right now which means ATI has to make and ship out all their cards then companies slap their stickers on them THEN they go to the consumers.

I think it is possible for them to do a calculated production rate to control the product and maintain a nice profit. More than likely they didn't plan on the TSMC problems or the demand.

yes I do. Everyone wants DX11 when DX11 isnt even ready yet. Its about having the latest and greatest. After seeing how much AMD is selling they have to uncrease products for demand, Supply and Demand 101. Thats why they are short, They arent baking enough cookies for all the cookie monsters...
