Default Hi Guys! Need help with picking a new card :)

Hey, you guys always come through for me on here... and I need some help! My current graphics card is a Radeon X1950 Series.. which is fine but I want to get a newer and better card that is still supported with new drivers from the website. I went on newegg to try to do this myself, but I get so confused! I only want to spend about $100, but if its a little more that is ok too as long as you guys think its worth it!

I saw this card---

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102825

---which is a *little* out of my price range.. but if you guys think its worth the extra $$ on something like that?? I see its GDDR5 and its 1GB but I really don't know what those things mean that well!! Help!! LOL!

Thank you in advance, you are always so great here!!!

1. you have no indication what your PSU specs are.
2. What are you wanting to use this for
3. Why the upgrade, can you go with a similar card.
4. ATI or Nvidia
5. if 100 is ur budget, have you considered a used card in the for sale section
6. what case size is this going in?
7. what slot card you need as well?

EDIT:
update your sig rig also

First, make sure your MB has a PCI-E slot (some X1950s are AGP, I'm not sure what's yours).
Second, make sure your PSU is capable.

That 4870 seems a lil pricey to me. I know for a fact NCIX has been flogging off some for $150ish in Canadian dollars, which is ~$140 US or so.

A 4770 is definitely in your price range, though, and still stomps all over that X1950 with cleats.

That said you should definitely find out as much about your computer as you can before you begin your purchase. The program GPU-Z is very helpful in this regard.

Looking for strictly an ati card? The one you choose would be awesome if you can swing the price! If not 4770, etc would be great. Like the others said, if you could list your CPU and PSU specs that would be helpful, because if you have a slow CPU, you may bottle neck the 4870..

Hi guys! Sorry, you think I would know the drill by now!

1) My PSU says 500W Silverstone
2) I'm wanting to use this for basically light gaming, but even sometimes playing the newest update version of Civ IV I get problems with my current video card.
3) ***I'll answer this below in detail***
4) I have used ATI cards forever, but I'll go with whatever you guys say
5) its a full size ATX case, its made by CoolerMaster
6)...
my ("our" LOL) computer: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
HIS Radeon X1950PRO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP
ASUS P5B-E ATX Intel Motherboard
6GB of GSkill RAM, (2x2GB and 2x1GB)

OK well from your comments I think maybe the best thing might be waiting a while and just upgrading everything? I was thinking in a year or so, maybe getting a whole new motherboard, case, video card, processor and EVERYTHING... but I really don't know if I should---I don't know what to do honestly. I really appreciate your guys help though, I don't know what I would do without you!!!

Ok i have a couple of thoughts on this one. Although i know that the x1950pro is a agp card, as my wife's computer has one that i bought her, i do not doubt what you are telling us either.

I can not locate on newegg.com an ati card that is pci-express x16. all the cards listed are nvidia.

I see 3 options here:

Option 1
I almost hate to suggest it, as i am an avid ati fan, but its only fair to offer a suggestion based on your mobo

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814162022

Im sure that card will be more then adequate

Option 2
HOWEVER!

In the interest in staying loyal to ATI

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814121325R

Little bit more expensive and it will work with your setup, and it will be a slightly better card. It will also give you a better card for when you do an upgrade.

And finally:

Option 3
this would be just doing that upgrade you were looking to do in a year so. As far as putting something together we would need a few more details about a new computer, such as price range, what you want it to do, how fast, how much memory, and so on.

If you want to replace your vid card now, i would suggest going with option 2, the ati card. Its going to be a better card, and allow a little more versatility when you do upgrade your computer.

If you do have the time and patience though, might be better off going with waiting to upgrade everything at once.

Grab a 5770 or if you're on a budget just look for some Ultra 8800's or a 9800 GTX
