Default Overclocking My 5870

Hi, I just built a new computer recently and went over the guides through the forum about how to overclock since I'm new to this. Here is my current set up:

CPU: Intel i7 920
GPU: Asus Radeon 5870 1GB
Motherboard: Asus P6T SE
RAM: Corsair XMS3 6GB DDR3 1333 TR3X6G1333C9
PSU: Antec 750W

I got my card running at 900/1300. My temps are 35 idle and 60-70 full load. But if I try to push it any farther, when I play games it stutters a lot but fine when I run 3dmark vatange. Why is this?

Oh BTW I'm just using the Catalyst program to oc

To get past 900mhz on a 5870 you must provide it with more voltage. Download MSI Afterburner which will allow you to adjust voltage and clock speed.

EDIT: I would also recommend OCCT for testing your GPU overclocks. It can run an error checking test to see if your overclock is stable.

Weird. But how come it can cleanly run 3dmark vantage but screw up on games. I guess I'll give it a try!

Oh, also another question I wanted to ask that I couldn't really find is. Can you leave the O.C. setting on all the time... is it good for my computer, or should I turn it on only when I need it (like playing games)

When your not playing games, your GPU IDLE... GPU core/mem is about 5 times lower. So your temp drops. Make sense? Sorry my english is not so gooood!

Hes talking vantage not idle. Reason for that is because a game, or a synthetic benchmark stresses your card differently and depending on how it does it it will cause instability and just need to find a healthy medium

Not sure about Vantage, but at one stage I wassuccessfully running Vantage and games but OCCT was picking up errors after about 30 seconds of artifact scanning, so I would not say I was properly stable. In my case it appears a driver update fixed my artificing issues, but my card is limited to 900/1300 anyway and I can't really see much point in flashing my bios to the Asus version. Its already plenty grunty at 1680x1050.

In regards to your second question, CCC downclocks your GPU automatically when you are doing low intensity stuff like web browsing or watching videos so there is no need to "turn off" your overclock. The software handles it automatically.
