Re Cabbage Patch... laugh. I was alive when they first came out, and I read in Penny Power magazine all about the whole recession thing, so hey.

Re 5770 crossfire - I googled, and hot diggity! Check this out! 2 x 5770 get right in there with a 4870X2 and turn in some impressive numbers.

Now I'm tempted!

The Cabbage Patch Dolls (don't laugh, mmkay ) were introduced in the early 1980s just on the tail of a bruising economic recession. The company, being understandably cautious, produced too few of them and didn't anticipate the strong demand from children who just HAD to have one.

Pretty strong parallels here, ATI/AMD probably didn't expect people to want these things even though they were priced quite attractively. I remember seeing 5770s for like $150 Canadian, which is pretty damn good considering a 4870 still costs about that much.

Alas.
I'm sure there are more companies like this, but I could careless about the Cabbage Patch Dolls, and the Elmo thing a few years ago...

I wanted to go 5850 CF because the very little difference as you mentioned but had no luck scoring one
I would be happy to spend $600 on a 5970 but $350 for a 5850? Probably not ,lol

I had a $600 card, it was the 7800GTX back in 6/2005 I believe. Now its worth $20 at best, lol.

I still remember that no one wanted a Wii on the launch day, and a month later as Christmas come, oh boy...those $250+tax consoles were going for $400+ on ebay

The 7800GTX was a beast back then, still capable of playing a lot of games if you don't run them at high res

Even the 5750s in Crossfire seem like a pretty damn nice setup. Seems it's a bit like the 2 x 4830 dark horse situation redux. 2 x 4830 compare favorably with a 4870 and at the time, a 4830 was like $120 whereas a 4870 could easily cost almost $300.

Good idea, that vapor-x is ridiculously overpriced. Even if they are hard to get. You could get crossfired 5850's for the price of his vapor.

Downside is the sale tax. Still tempting though... especially since I'm in the seattle area.
