Default 2x 5870 or 1x 5970??

Hi everyone

I am new to this forum and am currently in the stage of ordering a new pc, my budget is around £1800 could possibly stretch to £2k if needed.

As far as graphics cards are concerned i'm abit unsure on what to go with. I could either go down the CF 5870's or get a single 5970 and then pick up another one down the line. I'm thinking though that by the time I need another 5970 the 6 series will most likely be out and I may aswell just grab one of those.

I'd be using the setup for gaming (wanted to play crysis in v.high for ages now, and as a workstation for games design)

any comments on what you think would be best are all welcome and just the setup below in general.

thanks

2x 5870 would run cooler, use a bit more power and be able to overclock further.

Also would look cooler in your case, and be easier to resale when you are ready.

Everything looks pretty good, you might consider the 902 instead of the 900. I have both, 902 is quite a bit better, and has black interior.

For gpu, I went with 5970 (though I have a 5870 on backorder for a month now) because if performance jumps between series to date remains constant, 2 5970s will still compete after the 6 series is launched, whereas 2 5870s would not. If you are only getting 1 5870, go for it, but 2 instead of a 5970 is a mistake in my opinion.

Lastly, you might consider a quality SSD instead of that R2E, most X58 boards will clock about the same for much cheaper. I would go with a P6TD, Boodrage, or EVGA, and put the savings into an SSD. You will notice the increased performance MUCH more.

Not true. We have tested it ourselves and found no issues with the VRMs. AT and LH got broken cards that need to be RMAd. Please revisit the threads.

The 5970 is working fine for people on this forum, and I trust that infinitely more than "review sites". OCN ftw.

The 5970 is a bit oversized and requires overclocking (including overvoltaging) to have a decent performance for the money. I'd say simply get two 5870s and that would work great on your mobo.

P.S. you might wanna think of using RAID0 in your new PC for a faster storage, or SSDs if you have the money.

2x 5870, every reason has been posted, cooler, more overclocking, easier resale and so on.

The only thing that isn't wrong in your post is the size of the card.

I agree dopey
Yes I have a 5970 and its not bad at all,low temps, max clocks.I have some benches posted and also extreme burning test(furmark) to test VRAM all seems good to me.

Also heres a bonus I live in Canada and it was 250 bucks cheaper then 2x5870 and its just as fast. Also a 285GTX for Physx overkill all the way baby.
