Please Note: This is a copy of the thread I posted in October 2012. It has been copied to the Articles section, as this is a more appropriate section for it. Understanding How Power is Used in a Computer Hello fellow OCN’ers! Due to a rather large number of threads that I have read recently regarding power supplies, various components and their power draw, and questions on power distribution, I have decided to do a writeup on the ways that power is used in a computer. For the sake of this article, I will be using 120volt United States standard... read more
Sean's Windows 8 Install & Optimization Guide for SSDs & HDDs Why I created this guide: Well, because of all the positive feedback I got from my Windows 7 Install and Optimization Guide I decided to make one for Windows 8! This guide meant to help anyone with a SSD/HDD install and optimize their Windows 8 installation (Windows 8 consumer preview atm). I am currently using Windows 8 in virtual machines, I am pretty new to the new OS design so I will constantly update this guide for everyone's benefit as I learn more. If you would like me to put up a video on a... read more
For questions, comments, discussion and news updates about HSA, please see the forum thread in AMD General [LINK] Quote: At a time when cracks are appearing in Moore’s Law and the costs of shrinking fab processes continue to skyrocket, an industry that wants to keep accelerating compute capabilities must turn increasingly to optimizing efficiency. Ultimately, this is what GPGPU and HSA enable. By old methods, how much would a CPU need to evolve in order to facilitate a 5x performance gain? Now, such gains are possible simply... read more

So what is a Pico-PSU? In the simplest terms, it's a way to have the PSU be external thereby saving tons of internal space. They are generally low powered (less than 160W) unless you start doing some custom wiring. There are two parts for Pico-PSUs. The AC-DC converter (aka the brick). The DC-DC converter (what sits inside the case). Things to consider: The AC-DC converter needs to match the specs of the Pico-PSU. If the DC-DC converter can only take 12V makes sure the AC-DC converter outputs to 12V. This needs to be mentioned because many bricks will output to 19V... read more
Hey guys, I'm sure many people on here have bought stuff from other users from other websites as well as ebay. If you weren't careful, you might have dealt with a smoker, just like I did. I bought my 560Ti for $120 on ebay, not knowing the seller was a smoker. When the package arrived, this disgusting smell was coming from the box. Nevertheless, I plugged it in the PC and it worked fine. However, the fan was blowing the smell all over the room. I decided to get rid of the smell by taking apart the cooler and washed it with soap, then let dry outside. Then I took a... read more
I will attempt to once and for all solve this controversial question about whether PCIe slots are 'REALLY' backward compatible or not. All the information I am providing are from official sources and by that I do not mean some random 'So called' local experts. They were collected from official various motherboard and graphic card manufacture's technical staff and personal testing, experimenting and experience. Let me start by telling all of you how I came about doing all this research and finally got a valid answer to it. It all started when I started researching for a... read more
Starting with a thread asking Windows users why they don't use Linux, there would seem to be two main reasons- 1.Gaming and 2.Misinfo about GNU/Linux. This article is here to adress the misconceptions. I don't have the time to try linux/ installing linux is too hard/ I don't know how to do xyz in the installer You had the time to install Windows didn't you? Noob-friendly distros such as LMDE or Ubuntu take all of five minutes, a couple of clicks, and a few questions any first grader could anwser. Don't want to partition the disk? Then don't. Linux is all about choice,... read more
TLDR: Upgraded computer. No video with 27” 2560x1440 display. Solution: Insert line into xorg.conf which links to an EDID file which instantly fixes the display problem. Sound was too quiet with sound-card. Alsa mixer was set to 50% by default despite the use of Pulseaudio. Solution: Run “alsamixer” and up the volume on the required output lines. There are a couple things that I have been doing of late which I have had to do a fair bit of research on the Internet to find the answers to my problems, and so I'd like to make a post describing my problems and the solutions... read more
