I think when I have a few more pennies, I am ditching Nvidia and getting an X38 / X48 with 2 4870's

Nvidia is just not delivering enough performance for the price it is asking. I like nvidia, but unless they lower their prices, there is no using getting their cards.

Is it just me or in the crysis one, does the explosion effect on the 4870 look a lot better?

ATI cards rule the price/performance ratio value over any nVidia card.
But speaking between nVidia cards, the 9800GX2 has a way better price/performance ratio than the GTX280. Most of the time it had the same or even higher framerates than its newer counterpart. GTX200 cards are just overpriced imho.

GTX280 is not overpriced at all. It is just what it cost them to make the card. If 4870 costs 500$ to make they will sell it for much more the this time ATI has made something that performs good and cost less to make.

is it me or the GX2 keeps getting higher FPS than GTX280?

Not really, it does to a degree but the shown frame rate is very different to how smooth it plays. It's stuttery every now and then, this is exactly the reason i got rid of mine.
Watch the smoothness of play between the GTX 280 and GX2, it's vastly different regardless of what the frame rate suggests for the GX2.
