Default Friday Night Benchmark Fun

I recieved my new XFX 4870 X2 in the post today. I bought it to replace my HiS 4870 512mb.

Before I sell the 4870, I thought I would try my hand at some benchmarks and testing using the X2 in my system on its own, and then running the same benchmarks/tests using the X2 and 4870 in CF.

All of this was done in my sig rig with my Q6600 running at 3.1 stable.

4870 X2 3DMark06 Score -

4870 X2 3DMark Vantage Score -

X2, 512MB 4870 in CF, 3DMark06 Score -

X2, 512MB 4870 in CF, 3DMark Vantage Score -

So adding the 4870 in CF mode made little performance increase to up my scores a bit. The next test I done used Crysis Warhead. I made a detailed post on my blog about the FPS I was getting with the 512mb card in my system on its own, and also details of FPS I was getting with the X2 in my system on it's own. View that here - http://xd1988.blogspot.com/

As for Crysis Warhead in CF mode with the 2 cards. Terrible, just terrible. Info was showing the FPS doing crazy jumps from 12FPS to 45FPS. I initially had all settings on max from previous testing of the X2 on it's own, so when I loaded the game with the CF cards, maximum settings were a no go! I even brought the settings down to "Gamer" and turned AA off completely and the game was barely playable at these rates.

I am sure this will be related to the fact I am using a 512mb card in CF with an X2, but it was still disappointing seeing as my scores improved in the benchmarks, a slight increase in Crysis Warhead and I would have considered not selling the 512mb version.

That sucks that it isn't worth it in a real world application, but only in benchies does it have a slight advantage... I was thinking about purchasing one to go with my x2 for a little added bonus, but if thats all you were getting from the extra card it isn't worth the time or money.

i dont think you can CF a 2X along with a single gpu card, ive read about that somewhere just doesnt work. btw i saw you were using vista x86, what a waste of 1 gb of such high speed ram, go x64, heck go win7 x64.

Yeah, exactly.

The 1GB version of the 4870 would be a totally different story though. I'm sure that would see great improvements over what I tested here.

Yeah man, I know. I just haven't had the time to upgrade my OS yet but it's on my list of things to do when I have my week off at the end of the month.

Not as bad as my friend running 8gb DDR3 in 32 bit like a complete fool.

as long as you ran the bench on stock settings 512MB or 1GB wont matter as 1GB only comes into it own at 1920x1200 with 4xAA, I have owned both 512MB and 1GB 4870s and the 1GB was about 2-3FPS more than the 512MB at 1920x1200 with no AA in crysis

Damn, that's really disappointing.

but dont be disappointed cause once you start cranking the AA up the 1GB shone through, the only reason I didnt keep it was I screwed instaling my new cooler and had return back to scan and they didnt have any in stock so they gave me my money back

For some reason those scores dont seem right at all it may be that Q6600 holding you back a lot or something i can get 21,600 with just 2 4870's 512mb...

I think there will be a bottleneck with the Q6600 only sitting at 3.1. If I can push it a little higher I think there would be quite a difference.
