Default 3dMark Vantage Cpu Score much worse with new video card.

So I have the following installed in my system.
e6600
8800Gt
Gigabyte GA-73vm-S2
4GB G.Skill Ram
Rosewill 600W power supply.

With this setup I received the following score from 3dmark vantage, on performance setting.
GPU 5379
CPU 21152

I recently purchased a Asus EAH4870 BK 1GB and after installing with all the other hardware exactly the same, these were my new scores:
GPU 8801
CPU 4106

What can account for my CPU score dropping to almost 20% of what is was before? When testing games I get roughly the same FPS with the new video card. Maybe 10-15 FPS more in some games. This is definitely not the boost I was expecting.

The ATI card was installed after reinstalling windows, so my nvidia drivers were most certainly eliminated. My first thought was that it's possible that my power supply is inadequate and that the new video card is hogging power away from my CPU. The system is completely stable. I ran Orthos for a couple hours to make sure. Overclocking my CPU to around 3.150Ghz yielded slightly better frame rates but still nothing like what I'd expect with a new video card. All video drivers were up to date.

It's also worth noting that when monitoring the activity on both my CPU and GPU while playing games, the CPU stays pretty consistently near 100% load, whereas the GPU hovers around 50-60%.

Any insight?

You had physix running with your 8800gt, which balloons your cpu scores. Your ati 4870 does not use physix which turned it off in Vantage. Now you have your true cpu score.

=)

NVIDIA cards tend to do better in vantage than ATI cards, you cpu score is higher with the 8800GT because of physx. Looking at your new score it does seem low for a 4870, your gpu score for that card should be around the 10 - 12k mark

When you used your 8800 you probably had physx enabled, now with ATI you don't have the physx to make the cpu score look better than it really is.
That's a pretty big drop though, the time I tried physx on my cpu score was only about double what it should've been.

Edit: so slow I got beat TWICE...

Low? It's not even overclocked. You can't get 10-12k with that card because Your CPU is too weak. Sry but 3.1GHz dual core is too weak for 4870 to get full potential of the card.

Default Great.

That means none of my hardware is faulty.

I just need to save up for a new processor.

Thanks for the quick replies.

any quad core would be fine depends on if you want to stay in the same socket size or upgrade motherboards, we really can't help you all to much until you edit your sig rig (see usercp bar and edit system)

10 - 12k with this crad is probs a bit high come to think of it, 10k is probs about max. If you OC your cpu a bit more (3.2GHz - 3.4GHz) and OC your 4870 you should be about right
