Default 3D Mark Vantage question

Why is it when I run my processor at 3.7ghz I get a better overall score than when I run it at 3.8ghz? 3.7ghz i get 11694 and 3.8ghz i get 11563. My cpu score goes up but my gpu score drops. This overclock has been stable with 3 hours of prime, a long run of intel burn test, and some folding. I think my system just likes the 3.7 better as I can run much lower voltages at that speed which in turn gives off less heat.

I would have thought that I would have gotten a better score with that high of an overclock.

If I remember right, this does actually indicate less stability. I know you said it's stable enough for 3 hours of prime and a long run of IBT, but unfortunately, that is sometimes (or usually) nowhere near enough to declare absolute stability.

For example, I have personally found that my overclocks are never truly stable unless my system can do the following:
  • At least 12 hours of the Small FFTs test.
  • At least 12 hours of the Blend test.
  • At least 12 hours of the Large, in-place FFTs test.
  • About 50-100 runs of linpack (IBT, or LinX) with the maximum stress level (or using All of the available memory).
  • At least 10 runs of Memtest86+.
I've found that if I don't make sure that it can do all of this, then I eventually run into weird problems that don't seem like that big of a deal, but they always go away when I increase the stability even more so that it can do all of this.

So every time I tweak it or add new hardware, I just go ahead and re-test it to be sure.

Sometimes when you try to overclock something else is pushed too far. Thus creating a bottleneck. But then again a 100 more mhz, perhaps pci express needs to be bumped up a few notches.

I'm really don't card for vantage though. Just doesn't impress me enough to run it. I hope they release a new replacement for this one.

@ TwoCables: That is a lot of wasted time you could be using your pc for right there. Too me that is just pure over kill what you just stated.

Again, I found this to basically be necessary. I don't care if anyone thinks it's a waste of time and pure overkill. All I care about is what works for my system. Opinions are great, but facts and truth are far better.

I'm not the only one, either: I see threads nearly ever week by people saying things like, "I keep having these problems, but I know it's not my overclock! It's rock-solid stable! It can pass 8 hours of Prime95 and 15 runs of IBT with the maximum stress level (and it takes about an hour and a half). So what should I do? Should I RMA it? Is something fried?" But the answer is almost always the same: "the overclock isn't stable enough yet. Increase the stability, and then the problems will go away".

If you don't believe me, then that's fine. At least I know without a shadow of a doubt that my overclock is stable. But if all I knew was that it could pass a few hours of the Blend test in Prime95 and maybe 20 IBT runs, then I wouldn't be as certain. But you see, I prefer to be absolutely certain.
