New Year's Resolutions

Posted 12-28-07 at 12:04 PM by txtmstrjoe
Yes, it's that time of year again when we figuratively turn the page and move on to something new and, hopefully, build something better.

Therefore, here are a few stated New Year's Resolutions for me:

1) Lose at least 20 lbs.

2) Get myself a bicycle.

3) Spend LESS on PC hardware.

4) Build myself a file server (this does NOT contradict #3, as this will involve mostly spare parts).

5) Be more patient...

Why you'd never give your password in Runescape

Posted 01-05-08 at 01:42 PM by Pir
Here's a funny story about what i had to go trough today with my sons playing Runescape.
As some of you might now Runescape is a online RPG with lousy graphics, horrible gameplay and a ingame music that drives me nuts.

Anyway, My son decided in a short blast of good faith of naivity and good trust to give away his log-in accounts to one of his so called "friends".
Now this is where the fun starts, He expected this friend to get him some gear that he wouldn't...

The Dark Side of Folding

Posted 03-14-08 at 04:17 AM by txtmstrjoe
At its very heart, Folding@Home (F@H) is a noble endeavor. Like too few of the best of human inventions, it is a community effort aimed towards accomplishing an altruistic goal. The aim: To use the project's ever-increasing amount of computing power to simulate protein synthesis, and therefore eventually wipe out certain diseases that afflict humankind, including sickle cell disease, cancer, Alzeihmer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and others.

I don't think anybody can dispute...

Addressing Compromises in Design

Before I majored in English in college, I was a mechanical engineering student. It used to be my dream to become a race car designer and work in Formula One. But once I was in college, I very quickly discovered that I had a fatal flaw: I did not have the drive to overcome my weaknesses in mathematics. Although I believe I had the creativity required to be an effective engineer, I simply didn’t have enough desire to make my dream come true by knuckling down and really working hard on my mathematics....

If Phenom won, would anyone notice? *Updated*

From reading reviews and posts, not just on this forum but any hardware enthusiast site, I can get the impression that for building a gaming machine, the Phenom is a horrible choice. While it certainly does have its fair share of problems (clock speed, TDP, etc.), gaming is certainly not one of them.

But the question is, if AMD’s Phenom just happened to overpower Intel’s Core 2 Quad in anything clock-for-clock would anybody notice? Specifically, I'm speaking of gaming...
