An Open Letter to Game Developers.

Posted 08-08-08 at 01:57 AM by Brutuz
Updated 08-17-08 at 11:43 PM by Brutuz (Added stuff.)

This is an open letter to game developers and publishers who are concerned about piracy.

Want to stop piracy? Its pretty easy, make your games all cost the same (Or close, so say $30 for a new game, AU$40, etc, instead of sharing an extra AU$50 for games, make your games better and not just cheap ports, release shareware versions of your games as WELL as the Demo and finally, stop complaining about pirates and putting DRM and Anti-Pirate stuff in, Pirates bypass it, and when a person buys it, it just inconveniences them.

Not to mention, most pirates are people who either can't afford the game, but want to play it, or are wanting a preview of the game, the amount that pirate because its free is tiny compared to the actual number of pirates, In fact, there is only one series of games that I download out of spite and never try to buy, and that would be the Sims 2 series, sure, with Just expansion Packs its okay, $30 every 6 months? Okay. But then they started releasing stuff packs, it is so much of an attempt to get us to buy crap that I will never buy another Sims game, except the Base game and a few of the better Expansion Packs. (I am planning on buying the upcoming Sims 3 and Apartment Life expansion packs.)

From a Pirate, to Game Devs.
(Note: I will buy games instead of download once I have a form of income that can support buying games AND Hardware,)

I just saw the news that Spore won't have a Demo/Shareware Trial and will have DRM, I am calling on people to boycott EA after this, maybe it will make them realize that we aren't going to put up with their s**t?

Hey, gamedevs, do like Valve did. You don't see Valve *****ing about people pirating the HL2 series. Why? It's a badass game for not that much dough, no DRM, no disc for that matter, and it is so awesome. They know it's pirated, and they update steam regularly to try to defeat these pirates, but these measures work better than on-disc DRM and don't inconveniance the legit people. Be like Valve, make badass games and release them on Steam, and people will buy them readily.

This isn't the way I want to go about seeing piracy stopped. Takes a lot time and effort to make a game. Games have been costing around 60 bucks USD since the nintendo days. Back then games were cheaper to make and 60 bucks was a lot more money. 60 bucks is nothing like it use to be. Games have really came down in price.

I do agree with all other points besides the price. Why do some people think they are entitled to play and own every good game ever released? If you have the money to buy two for 30 bucks then you have the money to buy one for 60. Keep up the piracy and one day we may not have any PC games.

lol dude, making games cheaper wont stop piracy, removing DRM, wont either that will make people happier but none of these things will stop piracy, game developers know this that's why they have not done it, pirates just use it as an excuse to get stuff for free if a $100 game was $10 people will still pirate it to avoid paying that $10, it happens with programs like shareware etc

stop supporting piracy if u want it to stop (as in don't pirate anything your self)

William151515, I'm saying remove the DRM is a reason, you see people complaining about it all the time, while Pirates just crack it and be happy, in the end, it does nothing but annoy the consumer.

And making the games cheaper will help, Quite a few Pirates are people who can't afford games, if I get $10 a week from my parents to do chores, then I get get a game a week instead of every 10 weeks (Using Australian prices).

Do the maths, that's 52 games a year, rather than 5 games a year and $20.

you really should look at this then

    4. DRM made you do it:
DRM is designed to stop piracy, which is why it causes so much piracy. It's a bit like saying "I killed that cat because this cat is dead" but nobody will ever call you on your completely backwards logic. You were forced into a life of piracy because people tried to stop you from pirating things. It sounds like a ridiculous argument, but it is actually a brilliant one, with examples all across society -- drug addicts, for example, only shove cocaine up their ass because there are so many laws stopping them from doing it. Also, because it's so difficult to get a gun in the United Kingdom, there are ten times more shootings there than in any other country in the world.
f there was no DRM, and it became so much easier to pirate games, you bet your ass that NOBODY would steal another videogame. The first recorded theft in the world happened in 1996, the same year as the Content Scrambling System was introduced to DVDs. Nobody had even thought of stealing until DRM existed. Besides which, it doesn't work anyway

    9. Games are so expensive:
Games cost a lot of money, so that means you're allowed to own them for free. Everybody has a right to have everything they want -- it worked for Communism, and it works here. Your theft of software sends a very powerful message to game publishers, who will be so rocked to the core by your principles that they will lower game prices by 90% and then games will be cheap enough for you to buy them ... and you'll certainly buy them, honest.
In other news, golden crowns and cars made out of Fabergé eggs are also expensive. That means we should all have those for free as well

    10. Never tell the truth ...
That you just like having sh-it and are too much of a cheap fu-ck to pay money for it.

    (remove -'s)

i have just seen the kind of hardware you get, you can AFFORD games, you don't need an extreme hardware setup to play games, my pc can play most games maxed out, and this cpu is 22 months old, my dads getting me a core 2 quad in November and i get $40 AUD a week allowance (getting a job soon soon so i can get a really expensive gaming pc) i have to spend most of that on other things, and i can't be bothered saving it, but i don't say i can't afford games and pirate them if i badly want a game i can save and get it, most $20-$50 AUD games you are talking about you can save up and afford, them games don't require a fast pc, only $100 AUD games require that, but if u want more money get a fuc king job, you are just stealing from game company's and have no valid excuse for it number 10 is the reason you pirate games, stop telling bull sh-it and for once stop trying to justify your theft

are you going to buy every game/software/music/movies you downloaded illegally? to even out the stealing you did before?

and it seems the argument i posted (but did not make) seems to have silenced your argument

have you seen the gamers bill of rights?

Stardock, and Gasspowerd games are going to try and get company's to sign it and follow it - so that will make you feel better about buying games

I would, but I'm not going to buy any EA game until they stop DRM, I will buy games that I have pirated and not brought already, I have brought games as well, I have a legally brought Guitar Hero III for PC sitting in the corner right now, not to mention a few other games.
