The Degeneration of OCN

Unfortunately, Schopenhauer would have to disagree with you I don't blame him either...

But, I agree with you that the reverse is also true. We are human after all and we all seek comfort and acceptance from others. Thanks for blogging this and I hope that you remain with this community. You are a gentlemen and a scholar

Sad but true.

At least the reverse is also true.

Thanks for sharing!

I have already used this quote in the Off-Topic section but thought it to be appropriate to share it with you here:

Yeah, that's what's uncool about male-dominated sectors, you very often get lost in the penis-wielding crowd. You know, less than ten out of 65k is a pretty small minority, and it's even less for regular posters. Recently, the only I've seen are Cog and Vix. Oh and Bunnie, or however that's spelled, but I think she's gone too.

The internetz are a hard place for females... we had a girl in our W:ET clan once, she left within two weeks because of some jackasses. Rough, rough stuff.

Just keep on postin!

Kamakazi, I am going to resurrect this and say that in RTS games you NEVER turtle. I play SC \ War3 and by the 5th minute I have epic battles. RTS is only fun because its fast.. an hour long game is pointless, unless its extremely epic.

The Classics

I'm afraid it's not an apples-to-apples comparison you're making with just the sockets when it comes to S939 and LGA775.

Consider this: While the first LGA775 motherboards have physically the same socket design for the CPU, they are not identical to today's LGA775s. LGA775 P4s will not run on today's LGA775 motherboards; similarly, today's Core 2 CPUs will not run on the first-generation LGA775 motherboards. The electrical requirements for NetBurst and Core 2 are vastly different. Only the physical interface is the same.

And that's not even reckoning with the chipset compatibility fun, either...

In contrast, S939 as a total platform (CPUs, motherboards, chipsets) ensures an almost perfect and universal compatibility profile. Most of the earliest S939 motherboards and chipsets will run the latest S939 CPUs. The lone exception that I can think of is the combination of nVidia's nForce3, Vista, and a S939 dual-core. And that's nVidia's fault for not extending nF3 support for dual-core CPUs in Vista.

Thanks for your comment, though. It is much appreciated.

The Classics

In all fairness Socket T (LGA775) was released mid-2004 and remains the base of Intel's offerings. If any socket were to qualify as classic it would be T, not 939.

I don't think that the word classic really means anything in the computer world, though. The frenetic pace set by Moore's law has allowed the computer industry to revolutionize itself almost yearly, but the cost is obsolescence on a scale that has never been seen. A Countach or a Cobra remains a performance machine and can still kick the crap out of many modern cars that are considered high end. A Pentium Pro, however, which offered revolutionary advances such as the introduction of out-of-order execution to the desktop, was an outstanding example of technology when it was introduced in the mid nineties. It is no longer worth the silicon it's made from.

Moore's law will end someday, but until then the exponential growth of the computer industry will prevent it from producing anything that can truly be called a classic.

Assumptions (or, the folly of making them...)

I read this interesting article - and its resulant comments under the "blog" section - in deep wonder as to whether or not its confined only to this "blog" area - having ONLY these comments! :| - or, can be accessed via the broad forum - where I can see more.

Either way - I'd say, the amount of comments I'm seeing here surprises me - and I must say - hats off to you Sir, for your very well thought out analysis/critique.

As rightly said or alluded to though, as overclockers, we all assume from time to time - its such a pity we cant see and juice more insightful info from AMD's labs! ^_^

But here's my question to you txtmstrjoe.
If we can acknowledge the fact that the opteron chips are taken from - or closer to the centre of the wafer that AMD cuts its silicon from - we can AT LEAST accept - that even if some of those samples arent as prestine as we would esteem them to be - there is a HIGHER LIKELYHOOD that they are of a better quality?

And what exactly does that term.. better quality mean?

Sillicon is a semi-conductor as we all know.
Its nature is such that it can be either a conductor, or a non-conductor at certain times -and that those certain intervals can be controlled.
However - the extent and precision to which the material's nature can be controlled depends on .... ? - thats right, the QUALITY of the silicon. In simple terms - for example, the designated area for conduction / non conduction may not be as conductive/ non conductive as qickly or as FULLY as should be Ideally.

Certainly we can understand how directly this would affect the stability of a higher clocked frequencies ;

The conductor (silicon) may need to open a flow of electricty for a gate to function, but because the rate at which, or, the interval of time with which it has to do this has been decreased significantly (because the MHZ or rate per second has been INCREASED), it cannot do it as quickly as required - hence, the operation fails -and so does the overclock. How well the silicon can do its task - is a very important factor - IN ADDITION TO (as you mentioned) the CPU's internal components like the gates and registers
