Expensive school? No thanks...

Posted 03-31-09 at 11:57 PM by legoman786

Let's backtrack to about a week ago, maybe, about 10 days ago.

Here I am, sitting in front of my computer doing absolutely nothing, just killing time. I get a phone call from my dad saying that this school has this program in Biomedical Technology and this school is located just down the street from me. I was like "K dad, I'll check out the school, but if I do enroll, I'm not doing the Biomed Tech."

Shortly after, I get on the website and see that they have an AS in Computer Networking and Security. So, I decide to request some more information. Literally within 4 hours of sending in my info, a representative called.

I sat down and talked with him. Guy seemed really friendly, and the overall environment was overflowing with great people. I talked to his boss for a bit, before making up my mind to sign the papers. Both were extremely funny people with great senses of humor. Really easy to talk to.

We finally get tot he financial aid portion, and met quite possibly the best person in the staff. She is a mom about the same age as my mom and has a son just older than me. If you guys really wanna see my funny side, you have to talk to me in person. I mean, her boss walked into the cubicle asking what was so funny when she overheard us 3 laughing, my mom was with me as well.

But, the financial aid is where I'm stuck at now. I need about $5,000 to complete the $30,000 I need for this school and asked my uncle to cosign on a loan. He seemed very concerned as to why this school is so expensive. He then proceeded to ask if this school was accredited by the 4 main accreditation institutes, and that's what caused me to doubt this decision.

This school is not accredited by enough for me to go through with this. I can't believe I overlooked this one fact. I was about to sign over about $20,000 in loans for a school that isn't accredited and for a degree that may or may not be accepted by larger companies. With this new information, I'm gonna cancel the whole deal and look into some bigger, more well known schools.

I'm just really confused now. I was so enthused to go back to school, but now I need to pull out. Well, now I have to do more research before blindly jumping in head first into a school.

For those who want to know, the school's name is Brown Mackie College.

Dude, I hear you. I was going to enroll at ITT Tech a bit ago and was totally sucked in.. financial aid stuff starts getting planned, and then we realize it would be $44k a year...

Yeah, no thanks. Funny thing is, out of the group that took the application test the same day as myself, I scored the highest... Yet I won't be attending. Very cool campus and programs, but hoo boy is that a pretty penny to pay.

To be honest, I thought you were talking about either ITT or University of Phoenix, as those are two fairly well known and widespread private campuses. Haven't checked how much University of Phoenix would cost, but i'd imagine it's up there.

Basically I'm stuck doing community college for a while, and then either transferring to University of Washington: Tacoma or establishing residency in Arizona (since I have a place to stay) and attending ASU.

    School (cost) sucks.

I'm actually looking into University of Phoenix's BSIT program. I know it's gonna cost a prettier penny, but hey... AS that isn't recognized by everyone or a BSIT that is useful even on the other side of the world?

As heart-rending as it may be, I think that you made a wise decision when taking into consideration the amount of money that was to change hands.

Steady as she goes, Lego. Steady as she goes.

when i was fresh out of high school i wanted to go this school called the restaurant school. it's a culinary arts college in philadelphia and i was going to go and be a pastry chef. so i applied, got accepted and they actually let me buy books and equipment without even knowing how i was paying for the school (which i weird but whatever) so i started looking at loans that i could take out by myself..couldn't get approved for ANY of them because i had no previous credit history...finally i found one and all i needed was someone to cosign. the loan was for about $14k...my parents refused right up front because they cosigned a loan for my sister and she just ended up dropping out after having a kid. so all the only person i could ask was my grandfather...my parents wouldn't let me call him or ask him or anything.

so basically, i couldn't even go to school because my parents are selfish and retarded...and ever since then they both give me crap all the time for not going to college.

    Ya cat, my sympathies... :S

Well, Canada is definitely ALOT cheaper for education, that's for sure. I built up credit as soon as I could get a credit card and since then I have been buying stuff for other people so my credit score is through the roof

school costs me 7k a year including books. Parents have three kids and make just enough money to support all of us, and financial aid won't help me (I live in Quebec, they told me to sue my parents, because apparently I'm entitled to 50% of their income for school... if you do the math, 3 kids * 50% = 150%... ya, Quebec sucks).

I definitely see where you're coming from, but not to that extent. I'd never be able to pay 30k a year, I'm having a hard enough time paying the 7k per year... :S

Guys, I've decided that I'm gonna go ahead with this. Not that I'm flip-flopping, I am very careful with life decisions.

I thought about it and I came to a conclusion. If I am to back out of this now, there very well may not be another chance for me like this. I have a very big life goal that I want to achieve and to prove people wrong about me. I would become the laughing stock of the family for years to come if I were to not finish this small step in the long route that I have planned out for me.

Just go to a state school and make above a 3.0 and you should basically have free tuition.

    Good luck, my Friend.

    You're young, you're smart, you're capable.

Should you decide without trepidation to see a task through to its end, then I believe that you can not fail.
