Quote:
The road to life is not wide and straight; it is steep and tricky, and those who only travel on sunny days will never reach their destination.

That's kind of ironic. I just got finished watching a Horror/Thriller/Comedy anime called Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When The Higurashi Cry). I can't find the quote (annoying, because I just watched it), but paraphrased, this girl says that the key to happiness is to know your happy days are numbered.
I'm still kind of thinking on that quote, but just thought I would share it. Seems to have similarities with this buddhist quote anyway.

Because I'm a grammar Nazi of sorts, please permit me to amend the original quote:
Ah.Quote:The road OF life is not wide and straight; it is steep and tricky, and those who only travel on sunny days will never reach their destination.
Now I feel better.
Seriously, though, that's quite profound. And profoundly true, as well. (I feel like I can say that, since I'm practically a gray-beard in this company.
)
Thanks for sharing, M!

Anytime mega.
I managed to dig out the exact quote, but in the process I found one that foreshadowed it. The quote was from the girl, Rena.
Rena: I wonder.. How much effort is required to make a person truly happy. I think one's own unhappiness has something to do with it. Once it begins, it is effectively inextricable. To rid yourself of it takes the utmost, utmost effort. You exert all your effort, to the point where you question just how far you need to go, until finally seizing a hold on it. And I wonder to myself, "Can you really call that happiness?"
Later in episode 22, she's walking with the main character about happiness:
Keiichi: You know how I lived in the city before?... I never enjoyed everyday life like this before. I think I've definitely found happiness since moving to Hinamizawa.
Rena: It's the same for me. I mean, I moved to Hinamizawa one year ago, and I can't believe how enjoyable and happy life is.
Keiichi: If everyday life is this enjoyable, I'd be pretty scared if one day it looked like it was going to cease being like this.
Rena: No matter how prepared we are for days like that, they're gonig to happen one way or another. So, I think we should enjoy the present the best we can for when something does happen.
Keiichi: Yeah, it's best that we enjoy the present the best we can.
Finally it comes to the quote I spoke of (ep. 23):
Keiichi: If there is a certain skill for turning average boring days into happy ones, you need to tell me about it. *grins*
Rena: It's simple, you just have to realize it.
Keiichi: Realize what, exactly?
Rena: The fact that there is a limit to the number of happy days one has.

Niceness. And the road TO life could have been intentionally. Think of it this way:
The Hindu 'after-life' is a personality change and re-incarnation. Budha wanted liberation from this cycle, and formulated that the cessation of desire would accomplish his goal. As such, his desire is 'death', which is nirvana. This nirvana is easily postulated; as such, 'life' is only death.
This quote:
represents a journey, and since there are two stages to the process to obtain incarnation or nirvana, this road is itself life AND death, but the road is towards nirvana (identified by the desire to avoid re-incarnation).Quote:The road to life is not wide and straight; it is steep and tricky, and those who only travel on sunny days will never reach their destination.
Anyways, hope that is at the least interesting... I feel that quotes that maintain their momentum to this day and age were formulated with intense intent - and thus the 'TO' instead 'OF'.
xD
