English Final Exam

Posted 05-15-08 at 09:55 AM by mega_option101
Alight so I have my English Final Exam today at 11:30... These are the terms that I need to memorize and define during the exam:

Affective Fallacy: is a term from literary criticism used to refer to the supposed error of judging or evaluating a text on the basis of its emotional effects on a reader. In other words using your own emotional response to the text determines its true value.

Unity: an ordering of all elements in a work of art or literature so that such contributes to a unified aesthetic effect.

Intentional Fallacy: is a term from literary criticism used to describe the problem inherent in trying to judge a work of art by assuming the intent or purpose of the artist who created it. In other words you receive a false sense of the truth behind the work of art in doing so.

Reader Sympathy: when the feelings and emotions of the reader are deeply understood and even appreciated by another person/character.

Binary Opposition: Means by which the units of language have value or meaning; each unit is defined against what it is not. ie. Black excludes White.

Signifier: The signifier is the pointing finger, the word, the sound-image. It is in the interpretation of the signifier that meaning is created.

Signified: The signified is the concept, the meaning, the thing indicated by the signifier. Whilst the signifier is more stable, the signified varies between people and contexts.

Patriarchal ideology: is a set of ideas that support the power of men.

Separate Spheres: idea about the segregation of the two spheres of life: the public and the private.

Proletariat: is that class of society which does not have ownership of the means of production. ie. working class.

Oedipus Complex: when the child feels sexual desire for the parent of the opposite sex and desires death of the parent of the same sex.

Repression: The rejection from consciousness of painful or disagreeable ideas, memories, feelings, or impluses.

The exam is divided into six parts:
  1. Definitions of the terms
  2. Question on the movie "Shakespeare In Love"
  3. Two Short Stories (answer a question to one of them)
  4. Two sonnets by Shakespeare (answer question on one of them)
  5. Question on article "How to become a writer"
  6. Essay Question of the novel Disgrace

I best get to it now
