Technology does move fast, but is it necessary to keep up?

I realized how much I spent on stuff as of late...wow there was so much I could have done with that money.

I had an e4400 and an X1800GTO two years ago that was fine. I fried the X1800 OC'ing a year later so I got an 8800GT...sold that to get a X1950 which was enough and could fold. But oh no! Stanford finally released a GPU client for Nvidia cards and the numbers were ridiculous. I had to get my hands on one. So I bought an 8800GTS. Later on I got a PS3 for F@H...after realizing I could trade it for a PC that could get more points, so I did so. (e6750, 8800 etc)

But what did that bring me to? Well, now I'm trying to sell all of it. I need the money to take classes. The value of the parts is so little now, that its not worth it (almost). That whole long journey of upgrading in two years brought me back to the same thing I had 6 or 7 years ago: an Athlon XP with a Radeon 9700. It can run XP, it can surf the internet, it's quiet enough, that's enough right? (honestly I had some failures in the middle of all that)

I didn't even game...or benchmark that much. All I wanted was F@H points. But what's the point in that either? How do I know those points help? Am I just spending money to get some numbers? I could have used that money for books or something, which would provide more for society when I learned those subjects and got a job. It's better for someone who already has money to spare doing F@H anyway.

If gaming, folding, or benchmarking are of no concern, what more do you need than a basic OS and basic processing? Hell...why do you even need a full out computer? Isn't a netbook all that's necessary now? Is that even necessary?

I feel poor now, considering how much I could have by now. Still, this laptop is more than enough. (Pentium M, 1GB, Integrated)

I mainly bought it to fold on, but come on...1 hour later?!?! I really would've bought the Gigabyte if I knew ahead of time that it was going to be back in stock...*sigh*

At least the one I got is an XFX...that's really my only consolation.

I've had the opportunity to play Brawl. Actually on launch day, when a few of my friends got it, we played from midnight until 9 in the morning. We spent most of the time unlocking characters. It was nuts.

Now that I've played it over at my friends place, I don't seem to like the game as much as I thought I would. Sure, the amount of extra content and 1-player stuff is great, but Brawl feels toned down and slow. The great thing about Melee was the extreme chaos and all the stuff going on at the same time on screen. Brawl is the same thing, although everything feels so slow. The extra characters and stuff make up for it, but just barely. In multiplayer battles, the game is not really a test of skill, but rather of luck. Even without Smash Balls, Nintendo made the game slower to appeal to the general public.

Speaking of the devil (smash balls), I don't like them. They are just another item that gets in the way. Of course, I was one of those who hated items and always turned them off right away. Smash Balls are unnecessary and seem like a gimmick to me. There are final smashes that are a lot better than others (or with secrets, like DK's), but Nintendo could've been more creative with them. For example, Toon Link's final smash should be different than Link's. Sure, a Wolf form would kinda be like copying Ganondorf's, but at least it would be different from the two links. Also, the Star Fox team have the same smash? That makes no sense...doesn't Falco always say that he likes the sky better than the ground? He should be in an Arwing...Wolf should also be in his own fighter pilot...

I guess I'm contradicting myself because I always turn the items off anyway...alas I don't have a copy of SSBB, and I'm ok with that. There are many more things I don't like about Brawl. Alas, the game that would convince me to buy a Wii hasn't, so I don't plan on getting one soon.

I'm sure this entry isn't very organized (as usual) but feel free to comment

I'll go back to practicing my skills in Melee. I'm currently perfecting my Ken Combo, my Link, and my Captain Falcon (KNEE!!).

So finals are over at last...boy am I happy that I am done! I probably did pretty bad on a few of them but I think I'm ok.

What are my plans for the summer? Well there are plenty of things to do. First, I need to conquer my nervousness and take the driving test already! I kept putting it off. I even did the 5 hour test before I came to school

Second, I want to find a job. I had a job that paid well and I didn't do much work, but I may want to try something different this summer. At this point I'm thinking of working at a drugstore or something...

I was going to take a class over the summer, but now I do not think that I will. Since my parents do not want to pay for it, I will have to save up money this summer so I can take classes at a different university.

What about things computer related? Well, I plan to keep (most) computers at home the way they are. I want to find a Cooler Master Wavemaster for one of my older systems. I've always wanted a Wavemaster but they are so expensive! (for an old case anyway) I might get one when I have the money.

I have this mini-tower that I built while I was at school. It's the Cooler Master Elite 340 case, and I plan to mod it! There's an Athlon XP system at home that is never used, so I plan to use that case as practice. I think I will add a window, paint, and some extra 120mm fan slots. I plan to get a new PSU. This Ultra 400W and the Antec True 550 I have aren't going to be sufficient...

The thing is...I've never done those things before, so I will probably be asking for advice on the forums here. If not, I'll probably be reading a lot of guides so I don't cut my hand off (or my case in half)

This is going to be a great summer (hopefully)

I've even reconsidered my now declared Computer Engineering Major...am I really interested in engineering?

I'm considering business, but apparently the school of management here is even harder to get into than the engineering school. Perhaps I should take some classes to bring my GPA up and then apply? Hopefully I will do well in Calc so I can have another semester to give engineering another shot. Curse my laziness and lack of self-control!

Yes, finally I have gone back to college. My break was just too long. I was bored at home for the last two weeks since my friends all left two weeks before me.

So anyway, I arrived back on Saturday and boy do I feel overwhelmed. Ok, so over the weekend I goofed off with some friends before the start of semester. My schedule worked out so I have all of my classes 10AM or later, but such said classes are clustered together. I have about 10 minutes to get from class to class. This is only between three different pairs of classes, but at least one of them happens everyday

Physics really has me worried though. Many people have told me that College Physics will consume and break you. It already seems like that. There already is some reading to do, as well as a quiz on Friday. Not only that, the syllabus is so long and the grade determination is really quite worrying. 300 points from 3 exams, 200 points for final, 100 for discussion grade, 50 for lab, 50 for lecture quizzes. 100 points is dropped from your worst grade, which makes it 600 points total. This sounds good at first, but then looking at the final grade determination looks crazy...

(Based on % of 600)
100-80 - A
80-75 - A-
75-70 - B+
70-65 - B
65-60 - B-
60-55 - C+
55-50 - C
50-45 - C-
45-40 - D
Below 40 - F

Obviously with this scale, the grading must be tough! I'm going to have to work so hard in order to get a good grade. I really don't think I can come on here too often anymore. I'm probably going to die...

Calculus II does not look fun. The teacher is kind of weird. He talks like he is a recent grad student but he also says that he hasn't taught this course in a long time. Also, he says he is nocturnal....ok

My engineering courses seem ok, I've only been to the general one so far. Still the same as before.

My elective is "Music of Far East Asia." It seems like a good class. I get to listen to ethnic music, read about them, and memorize stuff about them. I think this course isn't going to be easy either, but at least I will enjoy it and learn something new.

That's all for now, I don't think I will be posting something in a long time. My friends still play games every day and all the time. One of them doesn't so I try to talk to him more :D

Anyway, my head kind of hurts right now and I have some stuff to do...I do hope that I live to tell the tale of college physics

Ok this is a slight rant about my experience with finals in college...so far

Today I had my first official final in college: Engineering. The test was more interesting than I expected to be.

First there are about 400 kids taking this final and it is in the east gym. Hmm reminds me of the NYS Regents exams. Well at least the Regents print out enough copies for everyone! Each TA gave out a number of tests, but since there were not enough a handful of people didn't get tests! I was one of them. So the TA's had to call up the print shop to go print out more copies. So basically 30 or so kids had to sit around doing nothing for 50 minutes. I was so bored and worried at the same time. I just wanted to get the test over with! Well finally I got my test and it took me 30 minutes to finish it. In fact, it was so easy most people had left the test before I even started. ***?

Calculus was...hard. In fact, I felt like I studied enough for it, it's just the questions were tough. There were one or two questions that I couldn't get. One of them I just stared at it and didn't know what to do. I just forget random things when I take tests. Oh well I don't want to think about it right now.

I just want some sleep....until my Political Science final...

Every week my University has this thing called Late Nite on Thursdays Fridays and Saturdays. Basically lots of events happen such as video games, movies, music etc. There's also discounts on things such as pool or ping pong during these hours.

Well I hadn't gone to Late Nite for a while and decided that I should go since I finally got an Engineering presentation over and I was feeling much less stressed.

First thing I did there was find Call of Duty 4 playing on a screen. I always knew I sucked at FPS games but one of my friends was playing so I decided to jump in. I have to say this game is pretty darn fun when four people are playing. We were playing team battle and I happened to be a terrorist. I was thinking "OMG I'm going to be such a terrible terrorist." I was actually playing against my friend who was a Marine on some map that looked like it belonged in Iraq. There was a game menu screen to choose your class of weapons and what not. Not knowing what was good I choose 'Survivor' or whatever it was called. The controls were alright. At first I thought I was gonna screw up a lot and the controls seemed hard. I couldn't even aim at first. But then I thought about the controls for a second and I got them. I think I played alright. I got a few kills and died a few times but the terrorists won! (not really a good thing but it happens) We played a few other matches involving Soviets and Marines which was good fun. I think I ran right into an air strike though. I learned from that mistake. I really like the aiming thing with the left trigger. It helped me get shots a lot.

Next I played pool which was fun because I was on a roll. A friend and I were losing at first, being behind like 5 balls. But then on one of the last turns (the other team had 1 ball + the 8 ball left) I sunk all the balls including the 8 ball and won the game! I was thrilled! I hadn't played in weeks but I was surprised how good I was through the night.

That was yesterday night. Today I went to the local mall today and found a Gamestop. (Actually strangely enough there are two Gamestops in one mall!). Anyways there was Mario Galaxy being displayd and I waited my turn to play it. All I can say is I had tons of fun playing the game. I only played the first 3 stars of the first universe but I had a great time. At first the controls felt weird, but they're very easy to get used to. Exploring the galaxy is really cool and running around small planets is great fun. My friend actually got this game and I really really want to play it! I came back later to play it but the nunchuck was messed up. It would go every direction except up and if you pressed up Mario would stay in place. If you let go, he walks off the platform...usually unplugging the controller and replugging it back in fixes it but I can't do that with the security stuff! (Actually it's physically impossible)

Next I found a few games that came with my video cards I bought earlier. I never got around to playing them so I decided to try some out.

Warcraft 3 is great fun...no explanation needed

Gunmetal (Yeti Studios 2005) is an interesting game. Kind of like a weird Transformers. You are a soldier in a new robot suit called "GunMetal" and it basically is a robot suit that can change into an airplane. The action is really fast paced, but the gameplay gets repetitive after a while. All you do is shoot things down. The controls are a bit hard to get used to...but they work ok.

Drakan is an old game about dragons and a lady trying to save a child from the orcs or something. I haven't played it much so I can't really comment on it.

A friend of mine picked up a PS3 and Rock Band on Friday. It looks like loads of fun but they won't let me play since they keep playing tour mode and I can't play hard mode. The reason he got the PS3 version is because his roommate already has a 360 and he wanted the game for himself.

I think that's all for now...

But I don't really use my blogs that much. The one I post most in is "My College Blog" which I use to basically talk about what's happening in college to my parents.

I have this blog on this website called Yuwiew. You get get money for whenever someone looks at your profile, blogs, pictures...essentially it's a social network that is supposed to be money driven. For every 1000 hits on anything you get a dollar. Yeah, not a lot. And you get can't get a check until you have 25. So 25000 hits for $25? Seems quite hard to get to me

And this one of course...which is supposed to be tech based. I would have a lot more if I wasn't busy here at college. Or if I just wasn't lazy  Actually this applies to all of my blogs

In fact I have quite a few things to say right now so I'm going to post some more entries

omg I just bought a PS3 for $275 shipped

The hard drive is fried  but I can get a new one for $50 or so. That's a standard 20GB Playstation 3 with a 60GB HDD for ~$325. Not bad for less than an external Blu-ray reader :p
