The Wonders of 1s and 0s (Recalling precious memories of my nephew Jacob)

The human memory system is a funny thing. If you're blessed with one that's ultra-reliable, then you seldom forget great moments that you've lived. However, if yours is anything like mine, then you probably have very poor recall of even the best parts of your life.
That's one of the great blessings bestowed by modern computing technology for which I am so thankful. Tonight, as the first step of reallocating my systems and deploying a couple of them to different tasks, I backed up the data stored on my office rig. In the midst of testing the success of the data backup, I chose to play videos of my now-four-year old nephew Jacob taken with my digital camera.
Though this might betray my sentimental nature, I have to say without any hesitation that I'm so glad that I chose this batch of data to test the backup. I had forgotten about these videos, and now I'm filled with a joy I seldom feel during the course of a normal day.
Who knew that myriad bits of binary code could hold the key to unlocking such deep emotions from within one such as me? Little Jacob is so different now that he's four compared to when he was an infant, all the way through to age three. Watching videos of him reminded me of just how much I love him; not that I ever forgot that, but distance has a way of dampening even the strongest emotions. And time and a poor memory have a way of softening the intensity of even the strongest emotions. Thankfully, digital media allowed me to get back in touch with these very strong and important feelings.
Technology is truly awesome when applied to improve the human condition. Tonight's experience is irrefutable proof of that.
For people with subpar memory recall like me, digital media is a true godsend.
