Addressing Compromises in Design

Before I majored in English in college, I was a mechanical engineering student. It used to be my dream to become a race car designer and work in Formula One. But once I was in college, I very quickly discovered that I had a fatal flaw: I did not have the drive to overcome my weaknesses in mathematics. Although I believe I had the creativity required to be an effective engineer, I simply didn’t have enough desire to make my dream come true by knuckling down and really working hard on my mathematics....

Difficulties in Sound Reviews

Posted 03-26-08 at 03:27 PM by txtmstrjoe
Out of all the components/sub-systems that comprise the modern PC, the sound sub-system is the most difficult to review and evaluate.

Why do I think this? Unlike most other PC components or sub-systems, the performance of sound cards, headphones/headsets, and speakers sytems is not so much objective as it is subjective. After all, can headsets/headphones or speakers add frames per second (FPS) to a game? Some might claim that a sound card would indeed add to system performance...

The Dark Side of Folding

Posted 03-14-08 at 04:17 AM by txtmstrjoe
At its very heart, Folding@Home (F@H) is a noble endeavor. Like too few of the best of human inventions, it is a community effort aimed towards accomplishing an altruistic goal. The aim: To use the project's ever-increasing amount of computing power to simulate protein synthesis, and therefore eventually wipe out certain diseases that afflict humankind, including sickle cell disease, cancer, Alzeihmer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and others.

I don't think anybody can dispute...

The Non-Empiricals Strike Back

Posted 03-07-08 at 05:20 AM by txtmstrjoe

It's amazing that Chipp wrote a couple of his recent blogs on something that I've been testing for the last couple of days myself. His thoughts have centered on perceptions and the apparent dominance statistical "objectivity" over sensory subjectivity.

I would like to push the point further.

I've been swapping out various sound cards in my primary gaming rig, trying to find that elusive sweet spot of good gaming performance (specifically, positional audio...

Old School vs. New School (a mild rant of sorts)

For the most part, I'd say I'm a pretty conservative kind of fellow. I don't mean this in terms of political preference (where I'm probably a moderate with a slight lean to the left), but surely in terms of attitude and outlook to life. I tend to be cautious in most things, and I prefer to approach everything with the intent of studying things first, calculating risk and reward factors, and having a good think before committing to any action.

Maybe it's because I have to exercise...
