Xmas Present

Posted 12-01-07 at 10:47 AM by VulcanDragon

So I was shopping around for my own Xmas present yesterday...my wife and I always pick out our own gifts so we know that we're spending our money on stuff we actually want. We'd rather have gifts we want than to be surprised by crap gifts!

Anyway, my gift was supposed to be Guitar Hero 3 for the X360, but man, it's sold out everywhere. I went to five places yesterday, and only the fifth (Wal-Mart) had any in stock. So I snathced it up and happily took it home for my wife to wrap. It wasn't until I got home that I realized that the box didn't have that Les Paul guitar on it, it had the old shaped guitar...i.e., I had bought a wired controller version. I didn't even know they made a wired version for the X360, all the ads and articles I have seen only mention the wireless controllers. So I'm ticked...my wife took it back, and now I have to find the one I actually want.

It's last year all over again...I got a Wii last year, but I didn't actually get it until February. I don't want GH3 that badly, I've never even played 1 or 2. Guess I should just come up with something else that we can actually find in stock.

Well that sucks...correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Xbox 360 GH3 bundle only have the wired controller?

I think the best place to start Guitar Hero is the original one because it is catered more to the average consumer. It seems like the newer ones are catering more and more to the hardcore Guitar Hero players. Anyways, considering you have the 360, GH2 isn't a bad place to start either.

Anyway, good luck finding a present for the wife!

No, the normal package for the X360 is the wireless controller. It's the PS3 that is wired. (And it's reversed for Rock Band...the PS3 has wireless, but the X360 only has wired. Strange.)

I was planning on picking up GH2 software later; but I really prefer the wireless controller, so I'm going with GH3. However, the wireless guitars will be sold separately in a few months, I think. If I can't snag a GH3 for Xmas, maybe I'll just buy the GH2 game and wireless controller separately. My birthday is in April, that might be a good bday gift if Xmas washes out.

I've only played a few times, but the wires never got in the way, and you'll never have to replace batteries for it. The GHII guitars feel really cheap and breakable though... I don't know about the wireless ones.

I think the wires will get in the way, though. My gaving TV is a 65" projection...it's huge, maybe like 5.5 feet tall. And then given the length of the X360's cables; the placement of the jacks on the back of the TV; and the only place in the room for me to put the receiver; I had to put my X360 on top of the TV. Finally, since I will need to stand a few feet in front of the TV to see what's going on and play the game, I don't see how the guitar cords won't drop down in front of the screen while I'm playing.

Unless the cords on the guitar (and the other instruments in Rock Band, I suppose) are like 10 feet long, anyway. I assumed they were only a few feet long, of similar length to a wired joypad. Am I right?

Batteries don't bother me, I use rechargables in all my controllers.

I've only actually played Guitar Hero II on my friend's big screen. He had his PS2 hooked up to the front, and the PS2 was on the coffee table right in front of use. I never really thought about how long the cords were...

The biggest problem I see in (console) wireless controllers is wasting money on batteries. But if you already have rechargeables, I think it's a good idea.

Still curious if the wireless controllers feel better than the wired.
