Default Day 7

day 7

Pip had a great time on holiday with her sister

Got plenty done today, started off with going to penny's with Pete where they let us use their drill to make small holes for the self tapping screws on the top and side lexan and metal panels.
The screw needs a small hole to start with so it can tap its way into the material.

I discovered when the lexan had been screwed in on the inside on the metal panel that it would stop the unit from sitting on top of the case and thus from screwing in Its these bits that stop it:

This is annoying beacause it would have looked much better on the inside flush than on the outside sticking out, also the lexan was cut smaller to be on the inside so putting it on top looks uneven.

Then Pete and I came up with a solution! The lexan can still be underneath for most of the way, but where the case chassis stops it we can cut the lexan and have it even with the metal. The part where the lexan is under the metal is what will be screwed to hold the lexan in place.
Where the lexan is even with the metal I can put a bit of tape underneath.

I realise this is probably very confusing, so i've done a paint diagram . the black is the existing case chassis (like in the two above pics), the red is whats left of the metal top panel and the blue is the lexan.

Another small issue we stumbled across is that the screws used to secure the lexan on the top and side panels stick out and stop the panels from attaching. They will have to be grinded/hacked off.

The top panel with lexan and fan attached, the lexan hasnt been cut to the above plan yet.

Side panel with fan attached:

Now for some painting

Pci brackets priming:

Case chassis first primer coat:

Yesterday when it was raining I did another coat of black on the fan brackets and put it in to dry in the bathroom with the fan on. The next day it looked horrible, the paint was spotty, patchy and wasnt shining like the first coat.
So today I wet sanded with 1500grit and gave it a good rub with meths then did another coat and hung it out in full sunshine.

Ok thats all, thanks for looking and a big thnks to penny farthing cycles for the use of their workshop

Default Day 8

Day 8

The weather has been real patchy lately, for instance the sun will come out full after being overcast all morning, then 30mins later showers! This means bad for painting, but I have managed to squeeze some in in the sunny spots.

This "work" has been over the last two or three days because I didnt get enough done each day to be worthy of a post.

This is the first rough coat on side panel:

Final coat on side panel. I'm real impressed with the color, surprised I got it right first time! props to my mate Ben for helping me choose

PCI brackets initial green coat:

Final coat PCI brackets and mobo plate thing (is it called the IO plate??).

Now for the back bit, this is going to be the hardest as it has the most detail (look at the plans on page 2). Masking tape is my best friend

First black coat on the case:

Thats all for now - Thanks for looking.

Oh and please comment it makes me feel special

Default Day 9

Day 9

I came up with a way to use that roll of soundproofing/draftstopping, here it is:

The will stop vibrations with the fan bracket, thus reducing noise.

Heres the fans installed in their brackets:

The painting is coming along just fine, heres some pics:

UV cathode inverter: (black, rather than sick blue/green)

This is how I did the other side plate (plan pg 2) so that green wouldnt overspray everwhere (i also had newspaper over the rest of the panel).

I crumpled under the pressure - I just had to take the masking off the lexan , man it looks sweet.

The extra screw that was stopping the side and top panels from sliding on to the case was real easy to chop off, just with a cheap hacksaw. I then filed it down smooth.

I ordered some ac ryan green uv paint to coat any fans that arent green and to color in the mobo, It should arrive tomorrow.

thanks,
Silver

Default Day 10

Day 10

I got a whole bunch of mock-up shots for you all. Bear in mind that this is not the final paint coat.

The following are night shots. Remember the case is going to have a green interior rather than the blue that shows in these pics. The blue led fan that came with the case will have to have its LED's chopped so that it doesnt ruin the green effect. The fan will then be painted with uv green, as will the rest.
Also the uv cathodes dont show up on camera.

{from the top}

This weekend I shall do the final touch ups on the painting, add the green uv paint and hopefully install my unworthy old rig.

Until then,
Silver
