Default Project: The Cage ~ Complete.

(My first ever case mod)

The reason I have changed the projects name to the cage is because my no0b friends always call it that and it makes me laugh. For example they will say "Have you finished that hard drive cage yet?" (they think they are being uber when they call a computer a hard drive). Or "Hey, that cage actually looks kinda sweet"
The project never really had a good name so I think the cage will stick.

Intro:
Recently I have been looking round at the different options for a case, as my current no name one is ugly and has bad airflow and it's time for a change anyway!

The things I am looking for in a case are:
-25cm side fan
-Clear side window
-2x120mm fan mounts at front
-1x120mm/2x80mm fans at the back
-120mm fan on top
-80mm fan on bottom
-mesh front grill
-not to heavy
-Silent
-Not Expensive

Initially I was thinking along the lines of the Antec 900 ($350 = $150 shipping from Aus)or the Ttake Armor with 25cm side fan (similar price), but clearly this would have blown my crappy budget.
As for the silent part, I was never going to pay the whopping $ or a pre-silenced box like a lian-li, so the silencing had to be DIY.

I realised I was going to have to mod

I was deffinitely apprehensive, but after reading plenty of threads here I realised that with time and patience I would be able to acheive the case I really wanted, without blowing the budget. I hope the final "pride factor" will overcome any frustrations during the process.
So off I went to the local pc store to hunt for a case that at least had a few of the above features. I decided on the icute S901 BB 5G1 shown in the link below. http://www.icute.com.tw/english/Arti...?ArticleID=322
It looks like this:

The S901 has the 25cm side panel fan, mesh front panels (both would have been otherwise hard to find), one of the front 12cm fan mounts (w/fan), and two rear 80mm fan holes.

I drew up a rough plan of what I wanted to achieve in my mod:

The 2 above intake fans are on the underside of the case, that is why the case is raised on feet.

~~~`ALL PRICES IN $NZ~~~
I want this case to be practical, with no silly dodads sticking out (exhausts, roofscoops, action heroes). My aim is a simple good looking case with god airflow & cable management. Unfortunately I am not very ver practical minded so the actual making could get interesting.
Tomorrow I shall get my case and take it back to my lair for dismantling
Stay tuned!
Silver
I doubt that case will stay silent... with all the fans...
Well as quiet as can be. If all the fans are under 22 dba it should be fine I rekon.
Thanks for having a think
I think its going to have alot more intake than exhaust. Eather the exhaust fans have to be fast to keep up with the intake sacrificing silence or your air is going to bottleneck at the exhaust fans. At that point having exhaust fans at all will hurt the flow.
This happend on my sig rig and I had to get some faster ones were the air bottlenecked so it can happen.
Yes I was thinking of that, i've decided just the one bottom 80mm fan. Also my top 120mm exhaust fan is a beauty-72cfm @14dba, by silenx. I think this should event things out a bit.
Again thanks for thinking!
[edit] oh and also the 14cm psu fan is exhausting
Nice looking case mod there. Where exactly did you buy it from. I've never seen any cases like that before.
