An image of what I think this thing may look like…. ![]() I have been thinking about this for a month or so. I think that I have run into all the potential issues and found suitable solutions in the mindscapes’ meandering. Ha! We all know how that goes…lol.. let’s see how many holes I can dig my way out of… Main design concepts: • Horizontal Motherboard: This in the likely event that I may add a TEC plate later on down the road. I don’t relish the idea of moisture dripping onto the graphics card or the RAM, so this orientation seems to alleviate that issue. • Removable Loop: Enables the loop to be removed from the case chassis and moved to another case. I will try to make the components removable with 2 hands, none of this Ganesh crap…. I detest juggling (and subsequently dropping) components. • Cooling: Direct active intake for GPU and RAM. • Carbon Fiber: Uuhhh… faux that is… at USD 90.00 / square yard and a lot more work, I think that I will stick to a quality decal for now… Carbon fiber some other day. Oops.. I haven’t even started and I am making changes. The top of the Control Tower will be at the same angle as the base, like so:![]() Cold cathode lighting and full fan control is on the menu. I did some shopping today. I am still jet-lagged, but needed to do something on this project so I went to TAP Plastics. Here is what I got for USD 8.05 …. Yes…8.05. The manager was in and saw me, she instructed the employee ringing me up to give all the scrap at no charge. I ended up only paying for the custom piece that I had cut, a single 13”x11” x 3/16” Bronze piece. TAP has just gained a lifetime and exclusive customer for plastic, acrylic and carbon fiber. Danke, TAP. ![]() After that score I heeded to over to Home Depot and got this stuff: ![]() haha… more plumbing flanges. Everything Zen.

Sound very interesting! nice to hear that there is someone else besides me walks through the plumbing isle thinking computers.lol. I like your "reinvent the computer" thinking. More people should be brave like that. Dig in dude I want to see this thing cross the line of conventional computers.

Haven't you ever heard of the saying "around my neck of the woods" to me that is strange if you haven't.

Motherboard module:
Here are the cut panels for the motherboard tray. I originally cut the side panels at 7”…. That was a mistake. For the 120mm fan to fit on the rear panel without blocking the I/O block they needed to be taller. I cut another set that are 8-1/4” tall…much better. I briefly considered 80mm fans, but when I have a say in the fan size I will almost always go with 120mm: more air, less noise. ![]() When I had completed the new side panels, I cut the appropriate holes in which to mount the fans. I am not sure when (or even if) I will go with water on the G80 so I wanted a direct air-intake. This was one of the design concepts that helped me in deciding on which motherboard orientation to use. With this configuration there will be a 120mm fan blowing fresh air directly at the G80’s air intake. Should I ever upgrade to SLI, I will place another 120mm fan on the front panel along with a baffle to direct the air toward the 1st PCI-E slot. But, for now a single fan will suffice. Here is a shot of the panel with all the holes cut and drilled where appropriate. ![]() Yesterday I went by HSC to get some mounting hardware. The motherboard needs to sit about 1” off of the tray in order for the cables to run underneath without a wrestling match. Here is what I purchased for USD 4.31. ![]() The “thumbscrew” look of the panel screws will look better than phillip-head screws that are the standard fare for motherboard mounting. The large thumbscrews are fated to be the securing hardware for the motherboard module’s cover. Here is a close-up of the stand-off that I will be using. ![]() The stand-off’s during a test-mount. Backside: ![]() The front-side at an angel: And with a test motherboard mounted: ![]() I am currently working on a motherboard valance. I want to have a cold cathode tube underneath the motherboard, but I want the lighting to be diffused. The valance will be made clear acrylic, and then taped off so that only the leading edge will have a glow. This will give a little accent to the motherboards perimeter while not being overpowering….. I hope.
