Default Project: BlackBox - Cube and Mesh

07302007 - Project on hold until ???

Knowing that the majority of my supplies will be delivered today, I decided to start my work log.

BlackBox is going to be my first from scratch case. I am a sucker for symmetry so I am going with the cube. BlackBox will be built around an 18" x 18" x 18" L angle aluminum frame. All paneling will be polycarbonate . It will not be a transparent case but painted black. Polycarbonate was chosen for its workability and strength. The sides will feature a window style cut out with a single diagonal strip but the "window" will actually be diamond perforated steel mesh. The front and back will also make use of the steel mesh but will contain more design and panel material for items like power switch, usb/firewire ports, ATX back plane and such. Top and bottom will remain solid. The mesh will be done in a metal flake black to really help offset it from the panelling.

BlackBox is going to incorporate a good bit of light. All LEDs will be blue to match the rest of my equipment (Razer Copperhead Blue, Saitek Keyboard Blue, blue lcd panel on M-Audio Axiom 62 keyboard, blue lighting on Griffin PowerMate). I am planning four single 15" CCL one in each corner of the frame. CCFL's will all be wired to a switch on the rear panel so I can turn it off at night to get some sleep.

The mounting of components on the inside is still up in the air but I will be taking advantage of the huge amount of space to have everything nice and orderly. I plan to use a double decker style approach.

Case will be water cooled and using all of my current sig rig components. I am planning on using blue UV tubing instead of clear. A new SeaSonic M12 600 is on the way as my current one was cannibalized for the G5 case.

I know words do not do any justice but this will give you the idea of what is coming. Tonight when I get home, I'll post some pics of the raw materials. I am planning on getting the frame together this weekend but if my job interview goes well Friday it might get pushed back to next weekend.

So I got angry phone call from wife about UPS leaving a lot of stuff on the porch and how much did it cost... So in case you are wondering this is what $286 gets you at McMaster-Carr (tax and shipping included)

3 x Alloy 6063 Aluminum 90 Degree Angle, 1/8" Thick, 1/2" X 1/2" Legs, 8' Length

1 x Decorative Metal Sheet, 1/4"X 1/2"DIAMOND Pattern, 20 Gauge, 3'X 3'4",ALUM

1 x Polycarbonate Sheet, 1/4" Thick, 24" X 48", Clear

2 x Polycarbonate Sheet, 1/8" Thick, 24" X 48", Clear

100 x Class 10.9 Stl Button Head Socket Cap Screw, M3 Size, 12 Mm Length, .5 Mm Pitch

100 x Alloy Steel Button Head Socket Cap Screw, 6-32 Thread, 1/2" Length

100 x Black-Oxide 18-8 Ss Machine Screw Hex Nut, 6-32 Screw Size, 5/16" Width, 7/64" Height

Of course my wife thinks it was only $150, wonder where she got that idea?

Cant wait to get home and actually start marking out some measurements!

I do feel for you!

There will be some pics tonight when I get home (at work right now) Nothing exciting just pics of the raw materials. I am thinking of stealing your idea of how you did your frame. I like it a bit better (read easier) than what I was going to do with all the 45* angled cuts.

TBH, 45 degree angled cuts would be a hell of a lot cleaner, long as you can pull them off...

thats why I own a Compound Miter Saw. I got it when I was redoing some molding in the house and this weekend I picked up some metal cutting blades for it. Problem is I am just not very good at using it and hate to waste the L angle on learning to use it better. I still have a few days to make up my mind on exactly how I want to cut it.
