Default [Project] Chif's Tech Station *Updated with pics*

Ok guys, me and my brother started to build our tech station today. The plans can be found here (Athough the final product will vary from the original plans).

We ended up using pieces of wood instead of metal (mainly due to budget) and using this has been alot easier, however i'm not sure if there are any disadvantages with heat etc?

Anyway, so far we've cut our poles and peices of wood and have painted them. We just need to wait till morning when the paint will be dry. If there are no errors etc then we can get to work on putting the thing together, if not its sanding time!

I've taken a fair few pics, but i'll put them up in the morning before we start work.

Ok guys here's some pics!

Here's the poles we're using, they're left over from an old aluminum table.

Here's the board of wood we found, we just cut that into two peices

Next we put masking tape over the poles.

Then my bro spray painted them. Although we ran out of yellow paint and in the end we just sprayed them black, along with everything else.

Then we cut the poles, we forgot to do that first and therefore wasted alot of paint.

And here's all the parts ready to be put together.

We've nearly completed that now, i'll just grab some more pics and post again soon. There's still a few things we need to buy and do to make it better, but aside from that it's basically done.

OK I've got the pics of it being put together and the nearly final product.

This is of the sliding drawer rail being attatched to the two poles. Instead of using the yellow paint for the effect on the poles, we used yellow electrical tape, it came up much better than the paint imo.

However we did come across one big mistake and that was our measurements. Our wood was the wrong size to include the drawer, which was one of my fears all along. In the end we just ditched the drawer idea completely, as there is plenty of room to work anyway, and just have the whole thing secured.

And here it is all setup!

Other things that need to be done are:

- re-enforce the structure with struts or something to that effects
- Add red couloured lighting
- Add radiation warning signs and other symbols etc
- Add a cable managment section
- Add a fan hole in the top level

Already while i've had this system running i've noticed a significant drop in my temps, as i also used to have my case on the ground. Although this could also just be due to the cold weather we're having at the moment. Anyway keep your eyes out for updates!

Looking good

However, my main problem with it is lack of airflow...

Get some 120mm fans on there somehow! Probably the easiest way would be 90 degree brackets hanging down from the top shelf so that you can just bolt on 120mm fans - having one of those on each side would be neat.

What about a horizontal fan on the top shelf too? You could cut a hole and have it blowing air directly down onto the NB/RAM As well as that, I'm guessing the hard drive could do with some cooling - why not tilt the PSU on its side and raise the hard drive up a bit so that it's inline with the fan?

Some holes in the top tray to feed wires through would also keep it more contained

Thanks for the tip! Now that it's running i've got a couple of fans on there, however they aren't mounted properly. I'm adding a compartment using the metal from my old case that will have wires put through it

Sorry bout the dodgy drawing

I'll have a hole that goes through both the top panel and the wire compartment, and create a tunnel for it so that there isnt just air being blown around in this wire area. I'm still thinking for ideas for some decent hdd cooling, but until then i've used your idea Thanks!
