Default [Complete] Rookie Antec 900 Mod

Completed:

Well I finally decided to mod my Antec 900. I recently spent about 4 hours trying to organize all my cabling without making new holes and it didn’t turn out as well as I had hoped. So, I brought up CD’s guide, gutted my rig and started the mod! It turns out that half way through the hole cutting I decided to paint the silver pieces white, so there are some pictures of that too.

*Please excuse the poor quality of the pictures as they were taken on my cell phone. Also this is my first mod, and use of large power tools ahah.*

The supplies:

Midway through the gutting I found an excess 40GB Laptop hard drive in a drawer, so I decided to make it a wind tunnel prototype and my Linux drive. So I symmetrically placed rubber bands to hold it in place, and surprisingly it is quite stable and firm. I cannot believe how perfect of a fit it was in between the two fans. (Once my system was all back up it runs at 18 Degrees (Celcius) in this little wind tunnel).

After the PSU hole was drilled:

I also drilled a 1 5/6 inch hole for the entrance cables from the PSU and four 1 1/8 inch holes throughout the case for connecting devices. For some reason I fell in and out of wanting to take pictures.

The final coat of paint:

Placing the rubber tubing around the freshly cut and painted PSU hole:

AH! Finally the beauty of no crossover cables:

Now for the installation of components.. First off were the two fan bays, and do to the top one having my rubber-band monstrosity I had to remove the stability brackets inside of the drive bays. Good thing they don’t matter due to screws. Anyway, once they were removed the two fan bays slid right into place:

This was the first point of frustration, the front panel connectors being an inch too short. Guess it’s time to extend them:

The first time having the layout of the two poorly placed motherboard connectors (I hate my board):

The front mesh pieces done with paint and put back on the case:

My older brother assisting me on trying to get the back panel back onto the case. It was quite the chore but eventually we got the sucker on:

SHE IS DONE!

The clean cabling. I feel it looks much better than it did before and looks decent for having my four and 24 pin be on the far side of my motherboard. I am just proud I hid all six fan cables and four cathodes:

The new bottom of my case:

Now powered on, I feel the contrasting black and white looks pretty good:

Well there it is; my first mod at the age of 16. It is not as neat as it could be, but hell it’s my first one. I’d call it a success, and I am quite satisfied with it. All there is left to do is a little touch up where the cables scratched the paint and it’s completely done. Hopefully I will get better at this kind of stuff as I found this to be quite fun.

What did you use to cut the holes on the mobo tray? They so neat. Except for the top hole... The case looks like it just came like that.

In the second picture I show the bits I used. As for the bottom hole I had originally made a pilot hole for a bigger bit and then decided the bit would be too big. Instead of making a new pilot I accidentally measured from the bigger bits pilot and ended up being too far to one side of the fan so I had to go in and manually cut the hole to expose the remaining parts of the fan. Embarrassing, but a rookie mistake. Thanks for the praise guys
