Well I finally wired up the LED's to the base and started assembling all the hardware.
I did half of it and then stopped. I was too tired and didnt feel like going any further. A couple of pics ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then the first hurdle... The IDE for the DVD drive was too short. ![]() I was able to pull out the circuitry off an old Harddrive enclosure. So I have effectively converted the DVD drive from IDE to USB. The USB wire is pretty long and it will be hooked onto an existing USB port. ![]() Some more pics ![]() ![]() ![]() I also finally gave into temptation and decided to do a monitor mod. The front bezel is going to be replaced with acrylic. I did a couple of measurements to check how it all adds up. The front bezel is about 1/2" thick so half inch thick acrylic piece is just going to be exactly in the same plane as the screen. So i need to add an other acrylic piece to cover the edges (Silver portions) of the screen. The portion along the red line is the silver portion I am referring to ![]() The buttons will be either replaced with vandal resistant switches or I will add 1/2" acrylic discs instead of buttons. The discs will be in contact with the push buttons. ![]() So here is the plan : I cant cut 1/2" acrylic with a jigsaw so I am going to use 2 * 1/4" sheets to achieve the 1/2" thickness. The idea is to sandwich a sheet of blue acrylic in between 2 sheets of either clear or solar gray acrylic. The first two layers will give me the 1/2" thickness and the 3rd sheet will top it off and hide the silver portion of the screen. I may light up the blue acrylic with some white LED's. The plan is extremely ambitious but I believe planning and patience can pull it off ![]() Comments / Suggestions welcome - wasted

I swear, this stuff just looks elegant. I like elegant.
How long of an IDE cable do you need? I think I got some 30-inchers lying about.

Yea and I can put my hand on a 36" IDE somewhere
![]() Wasted, that looks...just...wow. If I didn't know better, I would think it was a Syrillian build, and that is a sure fire compliment!

wow, mirror
![]() could you not just stick a 1/4 inch piece on top of the existing front panel? and what are the specs of that system? I love server boards ![]() edit: repo, it does look like a syr build!

but my craftsmanship or attention to detail is nowhere close to Syr. Syr is an inspiration and it was his worklogs and creations that led me to do this mod. Yes and for the IDE. anything around 30inches would be perfect. ![]() I can buy it if you guys want to sell it to me ![]() Quote:
![]() Yes I could stick a plexi sheet to the existing panel . but the existing panel is not flat. It has a slight curvature to it.So if you look from the sides its gonna look bad. The server is not too powerful .Its a Intel 2x Xeon 2.66GHz with 2GB RAM and 4x 36 SCSI 15000rpm drives in Raid 0. Thanks CR

Wasted, on putting acrylic over the existing panel. You could just use a heat gun (or other heat source) to heat the acrylic and it would bend/conform to the curvature of the initial piece. Might not be too much of a pain in the you know what.
![]() OT: I'll see if I can scrounge around and find that IDE when I get home.

Ok, scratch that
The only 30"+ one I have left is one that has red EL wiring on it that's gonna be used for my build :/ Unless you have a 24" with red EL, then I'll trade you. I don't need the length, just the lights
