Yes it does get really expensive nate. And for a noob like me who has to redo nearly everything, I need to buy double the acrylic on most occasions.

repo you just need to send some pictures of your amazing bondo work to some company. Sponsorship will flow my friend.

A tiny tiny Update :

I re-did the sandwiched base. This time it is a lot smaller and is rectangular. I didnt have enough acrylic so I had to make it a lot smaller.

Drilled a hole on the back of the monitor panel. This will hold the switch for the LED's.

Cut the acrylic rod into 6cm pieces. These will hold the acrylic sheet that will cover the monitor. They will attach to the sides of the monitor panel.
For some reason the rod started melting every time I touched it with the jigsaw. even at really slow speeds. The result is pretty very uneven cuts.. Sigh... more sanding for me

Thanks for looking,
-wasted

Thanks Wasted

My mod right now is going to slow, school and money have come into play at this point. That and I really wanted 3 builds under me before I try for a sponsor. The next one we'll see.

wow wasted, those grey vices are either giNORMOUS or the red ones are tiny
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the rods holding the acrylic sheet infront of the monitor. I will just have to wait and see

Ha ha . The gray ones are 6" and the red ones are 1" . Thats why the difference.

hmm lemme try and explain the function of the square rod.

I plan to add a 3/16" acrylic sheet of clear acrylic that will cover the screen.
Since I have taken off all the plastic . There is no real space to mount the acrylic sheet. The square rods will serve as a mounting base for the sheet.
The rods will be attached to the monitor by screws.

If the monitor is viewed from its side ..

I drew up a quick picture in paint. Hopefully that explains it..

That's because these rods are made of extruded acrylic, not cast acrylic. It has a much lower melting point (as you can see ).

Indeed.

I have not been able to locate cast square-rod, so I cut my own down from a sheet. Clear Cell-cast is available up to 2" thick (again, afaik).

Fwiw, I avoid extruded acrylic as much as possible for this very reason.

Oh now I get it. So it's like a sneeze guard for the monitor instead of the salad bar .

Yes I figured that later. I seriously thought they were cast acrylic rods.

Thanks Syr. Yes extruded acrylic is a big problem as I realized. but unfortunately my jigsaw wont cut anything thicker than 3/8" .
well not to justify my decision but I seriously thought they were cast acrylic rods

lol... . This update will make my intentions clear .. hopefully

Well another tiny tiny update:

I cut 8 similarly sized acrylic pieces. Each of them have a square cut onto them. (My trusty dremel with a 561 bit did this . I love my dremel)

Two pieces will be sandwiched together to make a 1/2" thick piece. and will be mounted to the back of the monitor frame.. like this...

When you look at it from the front....

This is where it gets interesting. I will effectively have a 1/2" deep cutout of a square whose side measures 5/8" .
I will slide the acrylic rod into this cut-out and then weld it to the mount

The acrylic rod will be lighted so hopefully I can reproduce the whole glow effect that the rods of the drive hold have.

Well why did I do a cut-out when I could have just stuck the rod onto the acrylic. Well when the monitor stands vertically gravity will come into play.
Each of these 4 rods will be responsible for holding a 3/16" acrylic sheet approximately 20" x 12" in size. I didn't want a situation where the weld gave way and the rod starts sagging.
By inserting the rod into the cut-out I completely eliminate the chances of a sag. and that way a lot of load is transferred from the rod to the actual mounts themselves.

Thanks for Looking,
-wasted
