Ill post an update shortly, btw
I used that Duplicolor on my plastic bezel and the door (which is metal) and didn't have any problems with it at all.

Generally etching primer on top of metal is to act as a sealer (to prevent the metal from rusting) on an automotive scale. (Etching primer is a little better sealer that regular primer) But this is a PC case and will never see any rain or wet conditions like a car would (at least we hope not ) so regular primer will be fine.

It's not like regular primer will flake off metal or anything, it just doesn't seal as well as specific sealer or etching primer (but it does seal) so you'll be fine using it!

Jessie's Gumdrop - Day 04

A small update for today...

Early on I had considered deriviting the case for painting, but then for some reason I decided it wasnt necessary. Then manyak mentioned it, and suddenly it seemed the right thing to do, as it will make priming/painting easier, and since each piece will be painted separately it will look way better when its done, instead of half-assed. I have decided to scrap the two-tone idea for certain parts, so now the doors and lid will be Gumdrop on all sides, and the chasis and drive cages will be black. That will simplify the painting prep and eliminate some potential headaches, but will still look as good asthetically, imho.

Anyway, some pics from earlier
Derivited case

apparently a common phenomenon for the rivet heads to remain on the drill bit after youve bored them out - not only was this new to me, but I just saw Repo xHassassin post the same exact thing in his worklog LOL

now that the case is fully apart I could get in with the finger attachment and finish up the sanding prep with 240

came across a sticker on the bottom of the case yesterday when I was sanding, but I left it there to remove later. today I put a couple drops of Arcti-Clean 1 citrus cleaner on it and let it sit a couple mins to emulsify. Then I used some 91% IA and a paper towel to get rid of the glue residue. sanded over the area, you'll never know it was there forgot to take the after pic

sanded the drive cage that was derivited, and as I write this I cant recall if I sanded the smaller hdd cage that is removeable and hangs from this cage... ... maybe Ill just remove that from the case altogether. I only need one dvd bay, so I can get a rail kit for the hdd and put it in this cage, and be done - sounds like a plan

vanity shot of the parts after sanding the door panels were off to the side during the photo.

The next step will be to degrease/clean all the parts like insane, and sand by hand the plastic bezel with some 400, I am debating if I should do the inside of it or not. I'll figure it out soon I guess, it depends on if any of it can be seen thru the case window, which I think it can. Hmm. I guess Ill be sanding the whole thing then... great

Once thats done its prime-time. Stay tuned, and thanks for reading

Well, not only that it is a -primer- its generally just used for places where multiple coats of high build aren't necessary. (At least at the shops I worked at) A small bondo spot (quarter - dime seized) just wasn't enough to warrant mixing up 8oz's of the 'real' primer we uses. So a little rattle can would work.

You are meticulous on that sanding bro! +rep for that! I would have scuffed it and called it good,LOL.

Do you have a pic of the paint you're putting on this yet? (last i remember you were looking for a suitable replacement color. )

Btw: I'm a/b to post something on those rivets in my thread in a few mins!

That's a stout little case you have there.

I've always thought that 99% of a good paint job is the patience it takes to do all the prep and finish work. Judging from what you've shown us so far, I have high hopes for this mod.

The mods-for-kids think looks like a lot of fun. I may have to massage one of my old boxes for my niece or nephew one of these days.

@Repo, thanks Actually the color Gumdrop from Krylon is still available, they only discontinued the special "fusion for plastics" version which required no sanding or priming before being applied. So I will be using the I/O krylon gumdrop for the entire thing. Just need to sand and prep the bezel inside and out

after this mod I have 2 more on deck, but I am going to investigate some more on the airbrush/spraygun thing like we spoke about in that other thread. There are so many options color wise once you decouple yourself from rattle cans. But it comes at a price too, and not just monetary investment. but thats for later I guess

@Warf - thanks. Hopefully this turns out how I see it mentally. So far so good. The only thing worrying me is the painting, and the acrylic thing I need to do towards the end, which requires fine detail cutting. This is my first full case mod so I thought doing a kids theme (or close to it) for my daughter would be a good learning experience in the finer points, without the pressure of getting 100% right super fast, like if it was my machine on downtime. Shes using a different case right now (a behemoth server tower kinda like repo's current project) once this is done and I swap the parts into this case, that case becomes my next project

thanks for the info and feedback guys, cheers

LOL, that poor girl, the case is bigger than her I bet!

So is there a theme? Like a specific cartoon she likes? Or is it just the gumdrop color she liked?

Btw, I got the post up on rivets in my log btw.

ok, since you asked I'll spill the plan here (nice rivet info in your thread btw )

-Gumdrop exterior, black chasis and innards
-the vent openings in the bezel and right side will be lined with black c-channel, and backed with modders mesh that I am going sand/prime/paint with super black + clear
-the handles are already flat black annodized aluminum (from crazypc iirc)
-the window will be trimmed in black c-channel, with a clear acrylic for the window
-on the inside I want to cut green uv acrylic letters that spell JESSIE and somehow mount or suspend them so the can be seen thru the window (planning)
-on the inside I want to cut from pink acrylic the general shape of a butterfly then maybe use different color uv hilighters to add detail to the butterfly (planning)
-on the front of the case, around the blowhole we (wifes idea) are going to put the petals and stem from a large sunflower kids decal/wallsticker
-on the back, for the anti jessie switches Im going to get metal washers to fit them, but I will sand/prime/paint them in the same gumdrop color, while everything else back there is black, I think that would look cool.

the theme came from her room, which I painted that purple color (light purple) with a white ceiling and door trims/closet doors etc. Later my wife added curtains that were like a light green. at first when she told me the color I was like "wha..." but when I hung them it actually looked cool.

So theres some background and the master plan
