Update #4 7/27/08

Ok so as I mentioned before I haven't been updating because Ive only been adding primer coats and there hasn't been too much interest on this project seeing as its been up for almost a week and there have only been 3 replies besides my updates.

Well I thought I would add a small one here because I started moving onto the color coats yesterday. I got the four separate pieces of the front piece with their first coat of white paint. The actual paint seemed to come out a lot differently than the primer-more of it and fast, causing me to make a few errors(too much paint in some spots causing it to bunch up and run). Also my can was messed up and it seemed like it was jammed because the paint stream would drastically fluctuate and change spray directions even though the can was very well heated and extremely well shaken. On that note Ive got sanding to do, but for that I need to run out to the hardware store, which i will most likely do after posting this.

Anyways, the pics:

One of the side pieces for the front:

The front disassembled:

The front assembled:

As you can see on the side there I have some sanding to do:

So except for the painting mistakes I made(although most could be blamed on the can of paint can's odd behavior) It is turning out pretty well. I will do at least one or two more color coats on the front and start with the rest, except for the side panels which I think need more sanding/priming.

Also, I haven't even started on the frame itself. It still looks like this:

I do have one question though for any experienced painters: Should I even bother priming this? 6 coats of primer on that thing will be a nightmare. One coat of primer will even be rough. I have noticed on a few painting threads people seem to paint the inside by skipping to the color coat first, without any priming. In fact I could not find any tutorial or thread where the person primed the inside of the case. I was thinking I should get the dupli-color engine enamel if I was going to skip priming.

Should I bother priming or skip straight to the black paint?

If you want your paint to stick and stay on the case, primer it! Let's put it this way, there are a bunch of folks on here who painted first, only to hated the results so bad that they stripped all the paint, primered and re-painted.

If you cut corners, you'll regret it. The amount of time that you save by not doing it, you'll double by having to undo and redo.

My $0.02 worth.

BTW - are you going to mod the chassis for cable management??

I like this case with white on it. It looks really cool with a good contrasting color.

Be sure to drop CyberDruid a PM about water cooling the A900. He has quite a number of options up his sleeve, I'm sure. He's very helpful too! Look him up in the preferred vendor section.

Yea I dont have the tools or the cash to get a dremel but im waiting on a friend right now who has one. I plan to cut another hole towards the bottom of the case right next to the psu so I can get more cables behind the panel. Depending on how big the hole is, seeing as there are already some I might either put a contrasting(in this case orange) light or UV paint back there on the inside of the right panel so It makes an ambient glow out of the holes where the cables are coming through. I wish I had the stuff to make some renders, or at least the artistic capabilities to draw something cool, but pretty much it goes like this:
  • Outside is white
  • inside is black
  • lights and cooling tubes when i put them in are uv blue
  • possibly combination of blue, white, and light blue lights, depending on how it looks
  • orange lights or uv paint behind the motherboard tray
  • possible sound reactive lights (I would use this to control the amount of white light, therefore changing the color of the ambient light depending on the sound
  • Orange UV tube coils

Basically the color them matches this somewhat:

a little of that kind of orange with plenty of blue contrasting with it, all in the black interior, with white and a little bit of black on the outside.

Ok so I have been doing some painting, Ive put down at least one coat on everything except the windowed side panel, which i just finally got it primed how I wanted.

Ive been having some problems with the enamel, mainly how it comes out. I have been following every instructions I find perfectly on how to paint, Ive been heating the can for at least 10 minutes in water, shaking it more than enough, paining in the right places keeping the can steady, painting from the right distance, and still I get tons of large dots that come out and ruin the coat, so im going to sand the color coats and get the shine I want from clear coats.

Anyways here is what it looks like when its together. Notice I haven't started on the inside yet, but I plan to tomorrow once I file down the new hole I cut.

Word. Looks clean. I can't tell from the pic. Is that pure white or off white?

Looking real nice. I love a simple color scheme and not one with 1000 colors in it, though i have always liked simplistic like black and white.
