Default [Complete] Adding a Fan to the Top of My Case

It has begun (plan located here: http://www.overclock.net/case-mod-wo...p-my-case.html)

First, I stripped down the case and got everything ready to go. I put two layers of masking tape on (it is 3 inch wide tape, super great) and measured where I wanted the hole, midway between the PSU and CD drives.

I drilled the pilot hole, but forgot to put the wood under. Good thing I caught that. Then I drilled. It was intense, and I thought it wasn't going to work, but slow and steady worked well. I also tipped the bit ever so slightly to one side or the other so it was only grinding a small surface at a time. That worked very well.

I trimmed it with trim from mnpctech.com.

Step two coming up in a couple days: painting the mesh, mounting the mesh, mounting the fan.

edit: sorry about the pics, my motorola razr isn't near as good as my nikon.

nice work
now add the screw holes

One comment on the technique you mentioned about slightly tilting the holesaw plane to cut smaller areas separately, it may have worked nicely this time but imho I woudnt recommend developing that technique as a habit, you will eventually bind your saw in a material, and thats just asking for all sorts of headaches. Steel pc case is much more forgiving than say tempered aluminum, for example. Just my 2c

If only I had clamps so that I can cut holes for my water cooling :'(

looks nice though. yea proper form calls for even pressure at 90* to the plane. It may work once or twice, but eventually your gonna break something.

I actually cut a hole in the top of my case last night as well! I did it super ghetto, but it turned out pretty well. Yours looks way better. I am going to do a worklog for mine asap. Good job!

I think my problem was that my hole saw I had was made for wood AND metal, and so the teeth were big and staggered. It would bind if I drilled straight down and if I didn't put any pressure on it, it would get super hot. I think if I need to do this again, I will invest in a one made specifically to metal.

It may have just been very dull, or maybe my case was just being ridiculously tough to cut.

So here is another question. What is the best way to cut the modder's mesh? (i got it from mnpctech.com also) I am going to cut to size and then paint it, but I would like a clean cut. Any ideas?

Make a hole in the bottom to add a bottom fan to create a second airflow

Check my guide, even though it is for CM690s you can use the same principles.
