Keeping all the original buttons on the front to work the PC is an awesome little detail. I would love to have one of these myself, lol. Trick out all the people that come over

UPDATED Original Post

(previous update)

Quote:
Update 1:__________________________________________

Gutted the Case and took some pictures before washing it.

The mini-itx mobo is 6.6in^2 so it will take up most of the bottom.

Update 2:__________________________________________
Epic fail Tried to mod a dvd burner into the PS2 drive housing resulting in killing both drives haha

Update 3:__________________________________________
Picture showing how much of the back the ITX board will approximately take up.
Looks like this slim dvd drive is going to be perfect!
Right now im working on securing the dvd drive to the top section somehow haha Stay tuned!

Update 4:__________________________________________
Received Atom board and PicoPSU! Still waiting on laptop dvd drive to ide converter board and mini heatsink but heres some pics. The board in the PS2
Going to use two of the network things to cover the part of the board that sticks out.
Very glad i found this, powered up and works great.
However, school starts tomorrow so im not sure how much time i'll be able to dedicate to the mod. I will work at it as much as i can when im done with my school stuff.

Update 5:__________________________________________
Got the mini heatsink in the mail today, so now the whole board is only as high as the I/O backplate :yum: save the PSU but thats understandable. -Seated both with AS5 Ghetto makeshift hot-glue mobo "mounts" haha (theyre actually not that bad)
Picture of the board inside the case:
Trying to figureout where to cut on the network extention.
And i ripped a USB header out of an old case i had laying around, which fits perfectly.. but it was cast in a rubber housing and a pain in the arse to get out haha

Sub-Update 9/2 :__________________________________________

Put it all together and installed Windows XP Pro to make sure everything worked before i put everything in there. Idk how easy it will be to change parts or anything. Going to figure out how im going to mount everything.

Update 6:__________________________________________
I didnt want to have to have an actual button for the dvd drive, and i had been thinking about it for a few days. So i opened up the dvd drive with a soldering gun in hand:

I soldered two wires from an 80pin IDE cable to opposite contacts on the front button.

Soldered more wire on, have to case in hot glue or something to keep them separate im thinking.

It works flawlessly, right now i can only short it with a screwdriver but i am going to eventually attach it to the original eject button on the front. Will feed it through the inside and probably fuse it to the existing ribbon cable somehow next time i get to work on it.

Subupdate: Added watermarks on all my pics and banner

Update 7:__________________________________________

So I've been having a lot of school work and whatever, but i have been working on the mod when possible. I figured out the wiring on the dvd drive after about a week of trial and error. Ironically the best result was achieved by using my original plan to fuse the wire to the existing ribbon cable, and it works perfectly. (deleted pics of it, will take more upon request) Heres a fitting, with the Drive and fan housing taped in place for a pic and for me to get an idea on space.

A shot of where im going to have a 120mm fan (hopefully) and the dvd drive mounted on the top portion of the case:

Very ghetto and un conventional, but hey it works haha Mildly melted the edges of three cds together, and hot glued some Logitech G5 weights i wasnt using to the bottom. Glued weight side down to the case.

Test of the drive on top of the glued mount.

Now i have to permenantly fuse the drive to the CDs while keeping alignment on the front end and it will be perfect. But im going to make the front panel function before i glue the drive in there. Now im working on the power supply. Im going to be using the original power outlet on the PS2 and solder the wires from the inverter to it to keep it entirely internal. Then i cut the other wire going from the inverter to the PSU since it was around 2 ft long.

The front panel, i plan to solder the reset and optical switches to the DVD drive and power button. The LED part, however, will not be as straight forward i dont think. Thank you all for your encouragement.

Update 8:__________________________________________
Amazing progress! Cut and welded the power cords inside so that the power inverter could be internal, in addition to being able to use the original power plug/switch. Each welding is taped individually, and then around once together for insulation. Works perfectly.

Also, i welded the dvd drive button wires to the front switch and after trying to figure out how i would fit standard LED's in place of the old ones, I tried the original LED's...

So basically the front panel is going to function EXACTLY as it does on a regular PS2, using the LED by the optical switch as the HD LED, and the reset switch as the power button. I'll post pics more later when i have it all finished.

Update 9:__________________________________________
I worked alot on the front panel yesterday and today and had it perfect (or so i thought)
Apparently there is some kind of contact between the blue LED and the power switch wires so when they are both plugged in, something shorts and the computer thinks im pushing the power button.

I burned out the original green LED, so i found another green LED out of a case and used that.

Originally i planned to use the green LED for as the power LED and the blue one for HDD use, or just have both as power leds. The blue LED is fairly particular and wouldnt illuminate when i spliced both sets of wires, or when i hooked it up to the HDD leads on the mobo. Now i have the blue on as power and green as HDD.

Picked up this little soldering gun for $20 so i could have more precision in soldering the panel. Worked great after i put my own batteries in it.

My dad got me a hole bit or whatever for the fan port. 4in in diameter and exactly in the center of the space below the PS2 logo.

Update 10:__________________________________________

So i cut the fan hole on the front. It is not the cleanest hole and yes i am aware the fan isnt perfectly centered. Screw mounts on the case inside limited where i could position the fan, and i am going to order one of these soon as a grill.

After i did that, i fixed the front panel problem. The panel is a PCB, and i forgot to slice off the bottom red circle / After i did that it worked fine.

Got drive perfectly positioned after four tries.

Know what sucks? The drive decided that it's front button doesnt work anymore.. even by pushing it, so im going to take it out AGAIN and if i cant fix it i have to order another one

lol wow, what luck.

But it's still looking great!

FYI, that atom board and inverter run so cool you really didn't need to make a big fan hole. You could have gotten away not having a fan at all!
