Default [Project] Qoob

Project Qoob

Current status (10.18.08):

...

After seeing all the amazing case mods done by resident modders on this forum, I decided to try and do one of my own, partially because I couldn't find the case that fit my needs and partially because I simply wanted to see if I can do it..

Project critirias:
  • create a slim media center box
  • use minimum amount of tools
  • spend minimum amount of money
  • do it fast - maybe next time

Preliminary tool set:
  • Dremel 400XPR (rotary tool) with circle/line guide and
  • corbide cut bit
  • additional drill bit set
  • router bit (?)
  • soldering iron
  • sand paper (400 & 600 grit)
  • car polish
  • acrylic cement
  • paper tape
  • rulers
  • clamps
  • goggles & mask

I'll try to stick to these for the remainder of the project, but will update, if I am in need for more.

Design:
Material - bronze transparent acrylic (inspired by Syrillian )

I used Google's SketchUp (which I never used before) to decide on the alignment of parts and size measures. The tool allows exact size measures, so it was tremendous help. I simply wanted an idea of a design and didn't try to make it pretty:

Aug. 22nd

Went to the local plastics shop (http://www.ttplasticland.com/) and got my acrylic sheets:

Took out the hardware from my temporary box. The hardware is comparatively weak, but that makes me worry less about messing it up:

Outlined a CD and drilled two holes (set an outside hole a little closer in, so I can curve the edges later with a router attachment):

Ready for circling:

I think it's a decent cut for a begginer?

after making two of those I decided to test fit..

it's a very tight fit and I am not sure it will have good enought air circulation.

Last thing I did was take the power supply apart to see, if I can make a smaller housing and replace fans.

I did a minimum amount of work on this project. I cut out a DVD drive hole and did some measurements of the other components. I will post some pictures later.

I hit a small milestone in regards to the power supply. I need a black mesh for the outside power supply wall, as well as for both case fans. I would like to buy them localling. Anyone in NYC know where I can pick those up?

A cheap mesh some guys utilize are small folder racks or trashcans from Wal-mart/furniture stores. Go to the home section and their are usually a few cheap desk items that are mesh. Cut the mesh to shape and go with it

Also, Home Depot/Lowes/etc would probably have some kind of mesh, although I'm not sure of the size/cost of it there.

Thank you for suggestions, guys!

Here are the images related to my earlier post (DVD drive cut):

It could have been worse, but the cut is pretty bad and required some last minute inventions (inner cut couldn't be done with dremel's line cutter, so i had to use a ruler with clamps and a 90-degree drilling attachment). I will need a metal file to fix this

After running some tests on my setup, I ended up blowing up my power supply, which discourged me from continuing for a bit

(i replaced LEDs on one of the fans and a DVD drive to red)

I bought a fuse from radioshack, hoping I could fix the issue.. and seems that I did

burned out fuse

removed

soldered new fuse to wires (hazardous)

testing new fuse

Cut out my motherboard tray (red 1/8" acrylic) and installed standoffs. I had to make some adjustment for fitting (fan and walls) after:

with mb installed. I used thumbscrews for standoffs for easier access
